I like holidays as much as the next person, but if another holiday is all that Mrs. Clinton can come up with, I don't believe she needs to be thinking about running for President.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

The exhausted workforce will just sleep in that day to recover from working 60 hour weeks so they can survive when they retire without benefits.

And of course, those crazy gays will just use it to go shopping, or whatever they do.

Pretty please note the sarcasm in the second part.

It is a National Holiday in ASustralia. If you don't show up at the polls you had better have a RELLY good reason!
A co-worker of my husbands is Australian and found it quite odd how it wasn't a holiday from work

"If you don't show up at the polls you had better have a RELLY good reason!"

That's actually kind of scary, sounds like jury duty here.

Here in the U.S. voters always have the right to cast an absentee ballot. Additionally, there is a law that states workers can take time off from their jobs without being penalized. I don't think we need a whole day.

now ya'll know that hil and i see eye to eye on next to nothing, but i cannot see how this can hurt anything. i don't know that it would necessarily help, but when the iraqis manage to get 60% of their eligible voters to the pols with folks blowing sh*t up and cutting of heads, the fact that we can't turn out anymore should be proof enough that we ought to be willing to try something to improve turnout. if the last election cycle didn't do it and i can't imagine the bases being much more fired up than that, what will? a national holiday? i dunno, but would it kill us to try? everybody laughed at giuliani when they said that the police were going to start concentrating on quality of life crimes, but it worked (yeah the computer program helped too). we can't be so cynical that we immediately dismiss suggestions just because they come from the other side of the aisle. not that i am suggesting that is what's happening here.

No, see, it's imortant to let Goth redirect everybody's attention to Hillary, it doesn't MATTER if her idea is a good one or not, silly Papa. Distract With A Clinton, especially when Bush's credibility goes down a notch every hour or so.

"it's important to let Goth redirect everybody's attention to Hillary"

I'm not trying to redirect anything. I think we can discuss more than one issue at a time. If the Dems were interested in voter reform, it would have been done by now.

I do agree that there should be a nationwide upgrade of the machinery, but I don't think we need a whole day once every four years to vote. The point is that people who want to vote will do it, those who don't want to vote aren't going to bother.

But the bill is not JUST about having a vacation day. The very link you cited, goth, lists several components which, frankly, sound reasonable to me.

Like I said, I am all for the upgrading of the voting machinery. I don't see the need for a paper receipt. What's the point?

I think if ex-felons pay taxes, they should be allowed to vote. But allowing ex-felons to vote sounds like a desperate grab for the Dems to get more votes. When all the ex-felons vote Republicans, the Dems will be wanting to change it back.

Finally, Loud-mouth Boxer makes my point. She wants to avoid the "debacle" of 2000 & 2004. "Boo hoo, we lost twice and now we are going to be crybabies about it".

Why weren't all these measures considered after the 2000 election?

No, Goth...the Dems only lost once.

It's not like the Republicans took the high ground on vote-getting. ..if instituting reforms that are aimed at encouraging and allowing anyone eligible to vote favor one party over another, so what. Those people are *still* people who have the right to vote.

Part of my anger during the last election was that I feel like Kerry didn't fight hard enough. And when sleazy tactics were used, he was slow in responding in an effective (ie equally sleazy) manner. That I even can say that makes me slightly nauseous, but the electoral truth as I see it, has become that he who is the most willing to play dirty, wins. This is a legitimate on-the-level attempt to encourage voting AND keep it 'honest'. Better than all the underhanded tactics from the last two go-rounds...

iflit, nothing in this plan guarantees a fair election. A holiday only gives Dems more time to try and vote more than once.

But nothing can hide the bankruptness of Republican immorality.

Sorry, you don't belong here, Samoh, begone with you and let the grown ups talk.

Our only hope is that the SMART Republicans like Papa realize that it has all gone too far, that these Rapture-believers and propaganda spouters are flushing the country down the toilet and dragging much of the rest of the world with it.

Goth actually BELIEVES in the Rapture, so that's hopeless.

"hill is nuthin but a hillbilly from arkansassss. never had a brilliant idea in her lifetime."

Nope, Hillary is actually a debutante from Chicago. Nice try though. "Hill is a Hillbilly" is such a nice change from "Hill is a predatory know-it-all lesbian"!

Anyway, why are we talking about this anyway? We should all know by now, when a DEMOCRAT suggests it, it's a BAD IDEA. When a REPUBLICAN suggests it, it's a GOOD IDEA. You know, like a department of Homeland Security. Wait for our wise benevolent leader to suggest it before we line up to support it or risk lifetime imprisonment.

OK folks, found out what happens in Australia. Seems all you have to do is SHOW up at the polling place, you don't HAVE to vote. There is a stiff fine imposed for people who just don't show up. So the answer to "how do they know?" is they check the poll #s and fine those who didn't show up.
