Posted: 1/23/07 at 3:14pmI have the Motorola digital box thingy. I can't figure out why 75% of the channels volume is normal but 25% are REALLY REALLY LOUD. It really puts a drag on channel surfing. Anyone know if it can be corrected?

I have Comcast, but don't have a cablebox.
However, certain channels ARE very loud, but I don't think that b/c of cable, it's probably just the stations.
E! is always EXTREMELY loud.

Posted: 1/23/07 at 3:36pmI have COMCAST, as well. Also there internet access. I have no cable box, though. The cable just plugs directly into the television. The loudness would have more to do with the individual stations, than the cable company broadcasting them.

Posted: 1/23/07 at 3:51pmI have the Comcast box with HD and DVR. Go to the menu screen, then setup, then audio. If you have digital 5.1 sound - you want to have your settings at Audio Output - advanced and compression heavy. This will make the settings uniform. However if you have regular surround through your TV you want to have the Audio output set at stereo or TV speakers, and your compression set to light. This will smooth out most of the audio problems - but channels such as Bravo, A&E and some NBC Broadcasts set the commercial audio to be louder than the shows regular broadcast. I have a filter in my TV that is set to make all audio changes uniform as well. Depending on your TV - you may have this as well, most newer model TV's are equipped with such filters, and again you can navigate them through the TV's audio menu.

The audio goes to my 5.1 receiver via optical cable and I was looking at that compression setting on the digital cable box last night and I recall that I have it set to "None". I was under the impression that no compression would provide better sound. I'm obviously wrong and I'll try adjusting it tonight. Thanks.

Posted: 1/23/07 at 4:03pmI have the optical cable for digital sound as well - I just find that the compression setting works best for my system. That may not be the case for all systems - just a suggestion. It took me forever to actually play with it enough to get it where I like it - wow, that sounds a bit racy.

Posted: 1/23/07 at 4:11pmCan I indluge you with a couple more questions cheesedoodle? I don't know what I should have the audio out set at. Should it be set at "stereo"? Or should it be at "matrix"? Also I've noticed that even though some channels say they are 5.1 my receiver doesn't automatically switch to Dolby Digital 5.1 like it does on some other channels. Any thoughts?

I have my Optimal Stereo option set to yes, and I have my output at stereo. I have been under the impression that Matrix is a faux - stereo feature for those who do not have integrated audio.
I have noticed the digital not always picking up as well - I just assumed it was the channel not actually broadcasting it in my area. Recently I have discovered though - that say TNT in my line up will broadcast analog audio, but when I switch over to TNT in High Def, it is broadcast in 5.1 digital. All of the HD channels have 5.1 so that may be the case here. Isn't technology wonderful? lol
