It didn't quite work, but I thought it was a wonderful experiment--an actual attempt to use the best of both the old and the new in the movie-musical genre. It was a little disconcerting seeing people in 1930s outfits rapping (and watching a number in which a wall full of cuckoo clocks warble "Ain't much time left, I've got to f**k you now"--yes, you read that right) but it played around with the film medium in interesting ways and was full of talent (and it was great to see Hinton Battle's choreography again.)
Thoughts?

Posted: 10/21/06 at 8:59amI was very curious but it was only in my area for a week. That and the awful reviews made me think I'll wait for the DVD.

Posted: 10/22/06 at 3:53pmI didn't think it had gotten awful reviews. "Entertainment Weekly", in particular, raved for pages about it. As I said, it was something of a mess, but with an awful lot of talent and good ideas. I find, these days, that I respect something that aims high and misses more than the shiny, shallow movies that are focus-grouped and test-marketed to death.
