I lost my phone once, and about an hour after I got home, I got a call from my cell phone on my land line. The guy said he'd found my phone in a cab and wanted to return it. I was naturally grateful and asked him where he was and what would be most conveient for him.

He mentioned the part of town he lived in; it was my neighborhood. He mentioned his street; my street. He mentioned the building number; it was right next door.

Craziest thing. And he'd actually gotten in the cab miles away from where I'd gotten out of it. Just one of those things. But I took it as a big thumbs-up from the universe.

"That sounds awfully suspicious."

It isn't, really. I just look suspicious. Anyone ever find $cash$ money on the ground? I have a gift for finding things. If you lose one of your contacts, or a diamond earring (or you drop one of those tiny, tiny screws for glasses), I'm the person you want around. It's a freakish talent.

eta: I was with a friend after a night on the town and we were sitting on our hotel balcony. His phone rang, and he got a very strange look on his face. I asked him who it was: "It's you!". Alas, when he answered it, the caller hung up and would not respond to calls. I later learned the finder had gone through my directory, calling every female name in it, proposing marriage to them. My companion had an ambiguous name, but quite the masculine voice. I had the phone shut off and a new one was at the front desk in the morning.

Kind of like my sister, who can walk out the door, glance down at the lawn, and spot a four-leaf clover.

Maybe it's a super power!

ghost, wish you could locate the two screws that have come out of the sun visor mount in my car. I've looked around the floor of the car with no luck. Never think about it until I'm driving and need the visor. Hard to adjust it so I can protect my eyes and see the road at the same time! Had car in garage for something else Friday, mentioned it to them, but I guess they didn't have the right size screws around or just forgot.

Well if you get any vibes about it, let me know. lol

I'll let you know, Jbara, but it seems to be a strictly visual thing. One thought though - they could have bounced - did you check the passenger side? Backseat? Under the seats and mats?

"Ghostlight" would be a great name for a reality series about someone who goes around finding people's lost stuff.

That would be somehow fitting, Reg!

ghost, good advice! I need to get off my lazy butt and do a more thorough search. Who knows, might find lose change or who knows what in the process! My car is a bit of a mess, I'm embarrassed to say.

I used to work in a restaurant and cleaned the place up every weekend. A few times I found some money, but always asked about it. If it was smaller amounts like $10 or less, nobody cared. One time I found over $100 by the bar and turned it in. That time it did belong to one of the bartenders who was working the night before and dropped it on his way out. People were shocked that I actually turned it in.

And another time, I found $50 on a table. I had to wait a few weeks, but I ended up getting to keep that.

I guess in a place like that, I always figure it doesn't hurt to ask because for all I know what I found could have been someone's tip money for the night. I don't feel right if that was the case and someone worked really hard for it.

If you decide to vacuum, put panty hose over the nozzle - that way, the screws won't get sucked down with the dust., and the suction will hold them to the surface of the panty hose, This is also a good way to find a small object lost in carpet if you don't have me around.

I think I'm too shy for a reality show. Might make a good short story, though.

eta for Marianne. If I'd ever found money in a business, especially like what you describe, that would be different, and I would be more inclined to turn it in. For me, it's always been on a sidewalk or (twice) embedded in a snow bank. One time (especially weird) was a fifty dollar bill at my front door downstairs, a door that no one ever uses.

I'm diggin' this old "thang" up to offer some updates.

So, the money my husband found ... as planned, we gave it two weeks to the day he found it before officially claiming it. No one ever did. Since we usually dine out on Friday nights anyway, we went a bit fancier than usual (for us anyway) and splurged on Cheesecake Factory. Even got an appetizer, split dessert 3 ways -- was my husband, our youngest son, and me -- and since our server was really swell, we tipped him 25% (and told him the story of the bill).

There's more though. That same day (which was last Friday, the 10th), at his work, my husband got some sort of award for being so awesome an employee. He knew he was getting some presentation but no idea if it involved anything monetary or not. He got a placque and a company Visa gift card, which, as it turned out, was for $100! He got out to the comic book shop, used book store, and library last weekend to spend some of his work award cash, which was cool, since, like I said, he rarely spends on himself.

There's more though. Crazy as this may sound, in Monday's mail, I received a check for $100 from Publishers Clearing House. I sh!t y'all not! I enter all the time and play on their web site (and rarely ever purchase anything, btw). Apparently I won the money specifically from one of their free online games, PCH Lotto. I had no idea I had won anything, so receiving the check was a total surprise. And yes, it was an actual check that I deposited the day I got it, and the funds became available in our account a couple of days after.

So bang, bang, bang, crazy insane luck lately. No idea if it'll continue, but nice while it's lasted! (Today at a local little mom 'n pop convenience market I spent the $7 I got in change on scratchers ("what the hell") and won $20 on a $2 ticket -- every one of 10 spaces was a $2 winner. So came out $13 ahead with that one.)

It so happens that today is our 33rd wedding anniversary. May as well hold out for 50 at this rate! Will use some of the extra funds to celebrate - the two of us plus our "chaperone" (aka son).

(Oh, and ghostlight2, never found those sun visor screws, but also never tried the vacuum/pantyhose method; took the lazy route and bought 3 screws cheap at the hardware store, and visor's working fine again.)

First of all, congratulations on the anniversary!

Second--what an amazing run of luck your family is having. I'm glad you're enjoying it! (Also glad you invested in some good karma by tipping the server well.)

When I was in 6th grade I believe, the rest of my class was on their way to art class while I needed to get something from my locker. I spotted $20 on the ground and knowing it belonged to one of my classmates, I felt bad taking it (especially since $20 was a lot of money at that age). I gave it to my homeroom teacher to find the owner, but I'm sure she just kept it.

I've found $20 bills twice. Once in a restroom stall, and on the ground at a Mardi Gras parade.

Ha! Great you found the money, but funny the bills were in two really gross places.

I found an I-Pod laying on the ground next to a Rollerblader who had been hit by a car.

Really! I'm not usually a "wash your cash" type person, but a little dish soap and rinse, followed by a dry ironing is called for in such a case, I think.

Must've been your lucky day, Joe!

JbaraFan sounds like the universe has got around to noticing how generous u r and decided to return the favour. U know the ol' "cast your bread upon the waters" thingy'

I find stuff all the time. Last big thing I found was someones smart phone in the st. She lived just down the st from me and had apparently dropped it when she got in/out of a cab. It was complicated cos she did not have a home phone. So basically I just called people on her phone til someone answered & eventually I connected her w her "baby". I've found $20 frequently around the subway collectors, but the bigest "find" I ever made was a small purse on my way to work. NO body was in the street. When I checked There was $1,200 in the bag! No real wallet BUT there was a prescription bottle w a name on it. Soooo I called the pharmacy pretending to be that person "checking" up they had my correct address. I used some of the cash to mail it to that person. Why didn't I just return it directly? Cos I was afeared that they would turn around & say "Hey there was $2,000 in here b4! Cos ya know- "no good deed goes unpunished".
Oh & 2 x I've had my wallet returned 2 me ( left @ a dept store cash register) and once my metro pass ( has my name & # & offer a reward on it) and once jewelry I left in a airport cab BUt that on I realized within 10 mins & cld the company who sent the guy back. I tipped him $50.00 for the inconvenience. So them's my lost & found stories.
