Hey all, I know I never post on this board but I'm sick of just lurking, hehe. Anyway, I'm Production Asst. for my school's two shows this year and I am having a total blast. Anyone else work backstage? Stage managers? Directors? Set crew-ers? Etc.?
I know that I myself want to go to college to become a Production Stage Manager on Broadway *dreamy sigh*. And for anyone reading this who knows about Equity Cards...pardon my stupidity, but do you need one in order to get a job Stage Manager-ing? *cowers in shame* I definately need to read more than I already am...

I've done it all. Set construction, paint, running/shift crew (shift happens), lights. And I was the assistant stage manager to our fall play The Odd Couple and Im reprising my role for our spring musical Fiddler on the Roof. Ya its a sirfire blast, cause if you cant be onstage whats better then making the actors look good.
like the shirt says: techie (n) - def. The person the actor yells at when the actors mess up.
Im hoping to go to college to major in theater arts, and Ill most likely end up focussing on the technical aspect even though I love acting.
SM's are members of equity, most other positions belong to the stage hands union (I don't remember their official title). Equity encompasses all actors and stage managers.
(Edit)
Sorry, I guess I should go into more detail. The stage hands union is a short hand that I'm using for the IATSE which is the Int'l Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. It's basically a gigantic organization that has tons of local groups, New York City (broadway) is based in Local One. Their members are those who build and operate pretty much every technical element of theatre.
Actors Equity Association (ASA) is home to all the stage actors and managers out there.

I am. We have a technical theatre class at school, and when we do shows we have to be the SM's, and set up rehearsals, space, we do the lighting, sound, sets, everything pretty much. It can be fun, but it can be annoying too.
Thanks, WalveMalve.
