As my earlier "what to do" post says, I'll be in New York next week to check out apartments -- among other things. I'd prefer a studio or one-bedroom but with rent in mind, I'm also seriously considering a roommate. That said... when I go on craigslist, rent.com and other websites identifying apartments, is there any place in Manhattan, Brooklyn or another burough that I shouldn't look (because it's run-down, unsafe, has escalating rent or is not close to decent public transit)? And where should I concentrate, if anywhere? I figure those of you who have been living there for a while know how to make the best of a city that could leave you penniless.
