Arbitrage

I saw this last night because of all the buzz Gere is getting for his performance. I thought he was fine, but really Martin Landau and Kevin Spacey were better when the movie was called "Crimes and Misdemeanors" and "Margin Call".

The screenplay was all over the place in spots, and then very good in other scenes. I think the writer/director was too ambitious with all the subplots, but I believe it was his debut film so you can overlook it.

Susan Sarandon and Brit Marling were good, but you kind of saw what was in store for them as soon as the movie started.

This movie is filled with people I like (I think I'm the only person on the planet who loved Brit Marling's "Another Earth") but the movie itself just holds no allure for me.

No Phyllis, I also loved "Another Earth!" Brit was great in that!

I know she plays the daughter of a billionaire in Arbitrage, and would have access to the finest hair salons, but Brit's hair is AMAZING in this movie. She never really was able to be a beauty in "Another Earth," but damn was she stunning in this.

I didn't love Another Earth, but I admired parts of it.

Her second writer/star project, The Sound of My Voice, is amazing.

I am definitely looking forward to Arbitrage. I think Gere has been overlooked for kudos too many times.

I was just about to ask if anyone saw Sound of My Voice. It played here for like five seconds, so I have to wait for video, but I really want to see it.

Another Earth wasn't what I thought it was going to be (I thought it was going to be more science-fictiony, I guess) but there was something about her character and her abject sadness that really got to me.

I've never even heard of "Sound of My Voice." Where was I when this was playing?! I would have totally gone if I had known.

"Another Earth" drew me in, like "Melancholia," because I wrapped up in the sadness and apathy both leading ladies had.

Report back with what you think about Gere, tazber. I fear he may get some nominations out of this because people agree with you that he has been overlooked in the past. Even if that's true I don't think this performance is worthy of much recognition.

The Sound of My Voice comes out on dvd/BD Tuesday October 2 actually.

It's funny because Another Earth came out and was overshadowed by Melancholia and Sound of My Voice has been overshadowed by The Master.

Poor Brit can't catch a break.

I'll have to pick up a copy of The Sound of My Voice.

Brit seems like someone who will have a Patricia Clarkson type career. Well-liked in certain circles, but never achieving true breakout fame.

Finally saw the film. My uncle kept on raving about it (mainly because the people on screen were the type of people he met at cocktail parties) and I was interested because it was directed and written by one of the Jarecki brothers (the other two have made Capturing the Friedmans and The Trials of Henry Kissinger, respectively)- so I gave it a try. I liked it but then again, I sort of became a sucker for a lot of the recession-related stories of fallen rich people (this included one of my former classmates in college being embroiled in his father's mini-Madoff ponzi scheme- he transferred, btw). Marling and Sarandon were good (as was Britt's hair) but I thought Gere was perfect for the leading role. He sells you enough charm without making it feel like too much of a put-on.

Happened to see this last night. It was okay. I liked the twisty part where the kid almost takes the DA 's deal but then they figure out the photo was fake. I didn't think Gere's acting was necessarily Oscar worthy.
