Are Macintosh Apples Passé?

It's strange how we don't witness changes going on around us until one day we find that everyday things we took for granted are suddenly going, going, gone.

The Macintosh apple had been for as long as I can remember the iconic apple, and the most popular one. It was never my favorite, though, as I always preferred the Golden Delicious or Red Delicious. I remember the latter being decried by connoisseurs as flavorless, but I always thought it had plenty of flavor. Then the Granny Smith grew in popularity ( too sour for me), followed by a host of others, Gala, Fuji, Pink Lady.

Then last fall, in the open air market in Union Square, I decided to buy a few Macs for a change. I started filling a bag with them, and the owner of the stand, which had about twenty different varieties, came over to me and said, "You want to buy something more interesting than those." But I didn't. And i thought this was odd, a vendor dissing his own product.

This comment came to mind this winter, when I went into one of the zillion salad bar eateries in NY looking to pick up a Mac. There was none to be found--- GS, RD, Gala, Fuji, but no Mac. Since then, I've found the same situation at other salad bar/ groceries, and corner fruit vendors. The Mac has lost its cachet.

I hope they won't disappear entirely. Just when I've come to appreciate them!
