Wasn't it just a few weeks ago that everyone was all atwitter with the unfolding shenanigans involving David Letterman?
And tonight, I accidentally paused briefly on his monologue, only to hear him make Tiger jokes. And the audience laughed. And he winked, and even referenced his own 'difficulties'.
And the audience laughed. Again.
Is this really an example of our national consciousness? Will anyone ever really focus on what matters, and recognize nonsense for what it is?

"Is this really an example of our national consciousness?"
Yes.
"Will anyone ever really focus on what matters, and recognize nonsense for what it is?"
Probably not.
Tabloid scandal has always fascinated the public. "Chicago" sums it up very well.
This country is populated by bottom feeders.
I don't watch Letterman so why in the hell should he be considered my national consciousness when he is just a comedian/late-night host who left his peak a long time ago?
Who are you?

Strum - obviously, your consciousness is busy being raised by paying close attention to the experience of Courtney Love's child. Clearly, this doesn't apply to YOU.
D2 - I've been wondering that a lot over the last couple of days.
Me three!
The obsession with Tiger Woods in general has me baffled. What makes this so fascinating to people? Is it because she busted his window out? His squeaky clean image? I don't really get it. I feel so sorry for Elin.

I don't feel sorry for either of them. Being cheated on doesn't give you the right to physically attack your spouse, regardless of your gender. I am rather tired of hearing about this.
The other night I was watching Anderson Cooper have a panel discussion about celebrities and what they should reveal and whatnot and I thought, "Mary, don't YOU have nerve?"
Technically she didn't physically attack HIM. She was demanding an explanation and he jumped in his car to leave. She grabbed the closest thing she could and bashed his car window out. lol I do feel for her because he wasn't discreet, there were many women and they have very small children. He put forth the image of such a family guy. Some report said that while doing an interview the day before the story broke while he was talking about his family being his life, his girlfriend was waiting back at the hotel.
That said, I am tired of hearing about it, too.
she, he or it is a minion of satan sent here to taunt and annoy.
if my wife cheats, i have the right to either knock out two of her teeth or break two fingers. it says so in the good wife guide.
conversely, should i cheat, she has the right to remove certain appendages.
i really should have read that closer before saying "i do" but you know i was dazzled by the pretty lights of vegas.
i thought, wow, dave, way to bond with your fellow philanderer!
Tiger Woods is still the rage because nothing else of note has happened since to steal focus.

Dave made fun of his own infidelities- why wouldn't he make fun of Tiger's?

"nothing else of note"
I really don't know what to say to that.
Well, more to the point, I have quite a few things that come to mind to say, but none of which should be said publicly (so as not to get this thread deleted.)

If he had smashed her car window when she was driving away, it wouldn't be looked on as him just smashing the car. He would have been accused of trying to attack her. I think the same thing of her. That's just me. I fully admit I don't completely understand heterosexual ways and customs.

Joe - valid point. But, my curiosity is more with the audience reaction. I realize they're not exactly a microcosm of America, but the wink/wink, nudge/nudge attitude from this particular group seems at odds with the "plummeting" poll numbers attached to Tiger and all the attendent judgement.
PRS, you are right, of course. I guess I just buy into the double standard. :/ Honestly, though, if she had cheated on him so carelessly and so many times while he was home raising two small babies, I don't know if I, personally, would think any less of him for bashing her window out.

Q. it's all about how it's handled. Letterman came out, and immediately made a clean breast of it. Full Disclosure. With self-deprecating jokes. If Tiger had handled it the same way, he'd be more popular now than ever. As has been proven by Nixon, Clinton and so many others: It's not the crime, it's the cover up.
And yes, Phyllis, you are 100% correct.

Letterman is a comic and his goal is to make people laugh. Like most GOOD comics, the jokes are as much at his own expense than at Tiger's.
I wouldn't isolate Letterman and single him out as a cultural barometer.

Oh, I know - as I said, hardly a microcosm.
I think what I really have in my head are a group of people very much like the dogs in UP.
"SQUIRREL!"
I don't think Letterman is a measuring stick for the social conscious either. Letterman, O'Brien, Kimmel, Fallon, etc all lift from the tabloids for their material. They're not news programs - they are entertainment programs. It's much easier to make a joke about Tiger's 14 mistresses that one about an impending war. They trying to take our minds off all of the more serious issues for a short time
kinda like jon stewart.
