Posted: 12/21/04 at 6:16pmI have a question about auditions in general. If you find like a list of songs that you are comfortable with and have gotten you into previous shows, would it be okay to make up a list and give it to the casting director so that THEY can choose what they want to hear at your audition? I have an audition coming up and I have NO clue what to sing, so I made up a list, and I can't make up my mind! But I'm just afrai it might make me look really cocky, because the list is pretty long, about a half a page.

The best thing to do is find out if there will be an accompanist at the auditon and plan to do a number from the show you are auditioning for. Do not assume the accompanist will be familiar with the songs you want to do. This could lead to disaster if the accompanist is not in the right rhythm or key as you want to be.
It is not unusual to have someone request to do a personal favorite and as a director, I enjoy the variety. If you want to do this, call ahead, and ask if it is OK and be prepared with taped music and tape player that you know how to operate.
Also consider doing a song a cappella (without accompaniment)
Good Luck,
Tom

Posted: 12/21/04 at 6:27pm^^ I've always been taught that it's sort of a cardinal sin to audition with a song from the show. If the director wants to hear you sing material from the show, chances are they'll take care of that later in the audition, or in a call-back. Does anyone else have any experience with this?

I've heard this too, over and over.
It makes a lot of sense. I mean, the casting director wants to get a sense of you as a performer overall, not just you in a particular role.
