Audition song for HS production of Aida

Asking for my daughter- she is a mezzo-soprano and really wants Amneris. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Well, Amneris' two big songs are "My Strongest Suit" and "I Know the Truth," so she should choose one song similar to each.
IKtT: Easy to Be Hard, What I Did For Love
MSS: any uptempo from "The Wedding Singer," Take Me or Leave Me
also maybe look into some Elton John pop songs

I knew I could count on you to give a response. I will tell her about your suggestions. What's hard is that not only is Amneris a great singer but she also has a lot of character and sass! She will audition with one song and then at the callbacks will sing one from the show. So my daughter's not sure if she should show her vocal range or charcter range. She's worried that because she is such a strong dancer- they will put her as that and she wants to show that she really can sing! Thanks again for being the lone responder!

Rainbow High from "Evita" might work, too, if she can belt the high notes. If she can sing that song well, she'll be labeled as an amazing singer for the rest of her HS career.
So Much Better from "Legally Blond" would show a lot of character and sass and is somewhat vocally challenging, too.

So, I really like bwaylvsong's suggestion of "Rainbow High" it seems to fit Amneris very well.

I'll keep thinking, but maybe these:
"Take Me or Leave Me" from Rent
"Suddenly Seymour" from Little Shop (?)
"Nobody's Side" or "I Know Him So Well" from Chess

Ok- so she sang "A Change in Me" from Beauty and the Beast. They had to use a ballad and she had practiced this song this summer. She felt comfortable with it and her voice teacher said it was a good choice for her. Afterall- it is from another Disney show and somewhat similar to the tempo of "I Know the Truth". I really love all of your suggestions and she did like some of them as well- just not enough time to get it all together- especially since she just finished a show last week. She said about 6 people did "On My Own" from Les Mis. All they wanted to see was that she could hold her pitch. Next up- dance auditions. I never worry about that- she has been dancing for about 12 years and it's second nature to her. I'll let you know how it turns out. With over 2000 people seeing this thread, thought you'd like to know!
