Hi all,
I want to audition for Little Red. The auditions are in two weeks.
Her range is listed at Bb3 - F5 Soprano.
I was thinking maybe My New Philosophy, but I also wanted some Sondheim songs because they're more that style. Any suggestions?
Also, what kind of thing should I wear? I was thinking a skirt (it's not a big dance show and she wears one) and maybe a red top? Or would the red top be too bold?

My New Philosophy should be fine. If you need to do a Sondheim song, your best bet would be Glamorous Life from "Night Music". The skirt and red top would definitely be appropriate.

I'm a little worried that My New Philosophy will be overdone for Little Red.
If I do wind up doing it though, I have 32 bars. Which do you think would be best?

I'd say prepare both and go with your gut (or advice from your voice teacher), depending on what you hear from the other girls and the vibe you get at the audition.

I was also thinking of I Want More from Lestat I don't know if it would be 'in the stlye' of the show, but I think it's around the same vocal range and kind of bratty.

Try to avoid doing a Sondheim song at an audition for a Sondheim show. (Actually, try to avoid doing them at all at audition, because, (due to his brilliance), they're waayyy over done). I Want More actually TOTALLY popped into my head when I read this, so I think that might be OK. Another is My Party Dress. It's kind of crazy like I Know Things Now is, and will show off the same kind of range Little Red needs :) Break a leg!!!

I was thinking of Sondheim because it said in the style of the show and he stands out so much that I thought it'd be a good idea.
I love I Want More and it's bratty and spoiled so I thought it would fit, but does it seem like Little Red?

I've actually heard the opposite (of what FlowerChild said) about singing Sondheim at an audition for a Sondheim show- it's the only kind of audition that it WOULD be appropriate. I Want More is totally wrong stylistically for ITW, but My Party Dress is a great suggestion.

Yeah that's why I'm leaning towards it so much but I don't know what songs. He writes more for jaded adults than teenagers so it's difficult. I know If Mama Was Married might be good.

Well, it could be more Little Red Riding Hood, for sure. But, it's around the same range, and the good part about it is the fact it's not well-known, which gives you an advantage because it gets the director's attention. :) And you can always act it less- you know, vampire, and more bratty little girl. She's being a little sarcastic in the song, and if you were not to really play into that, I think it would make the character more like Little Red, and would be really good! :)

This is the Sondheim song I suggested earlier:

My problem with I Want More is that it's wrong musically- it's too pop/rock for ITW.
If Mama Was Married would be a very good choice.

What about Spelling Bee? Something like I Know Six Languages?

bwaylvsong: Really? That's really interesting. I've been told my multiple teachers not to use the composer's music at and audition. But that makes sense, actually. I guess it just depends on who you ask! :)

Kr: The female songs in Bee are too contemporary
FlowerChild: Absolutely! In addition to what I've heard/read, I go to auditions for professional shows all the time (including for Broadway shows) and hear the Equity members (aka the most experienced auditioners) sing songs by the same composer all the time. The only no-nos are singing from the show itself (unless the breakdown says it's ok) and singing in the wrong style.

Cool! Thanks for that info, it's good to know! :)

Let's see..
"I Was Born to Entertain" from Ruthless! might be good. Also try "Happily Ever After" or "Shy" from Once Upon a Mattress.
Hope I helped!

What about 'Everybody Says Don't' from Anyone Can Whistle? It's a patter song and can seem kind of bratty
