Millie - If you're considering travelling to NYC on a weekend anytime during the summer you do NOT want to drive on 95 unless it's at 3:00am. The east coast corridor is one long slow moving parking lot on Saturdays and Sunday as everyone tries to reach the beach. You'll get to NYC, but it will take hours and hours and you'll arrive tense and frustrated. Been there, done that, killed a passenger or two. Amtrak is faster (less than 3 hours) and, despite my experience of last night, usually very reliable.
Well, yeah, there is the cost. But with tolls, gas and parking, driving 95 in the summer is getting almost as bad.
