In the kitchen baking some things to take to work tomorrow.
We begin 1/2 days on Fridays, and we're having an Open House in the morning to celebrate our new office floor.
I'm making
Caramel Coffee Cake
Madiera Poppy Seed Cake
Scones and Raspberry Jam
None of you need to know any of this, nor care, but I thought I'd post something while I bake.
Reminds me of my days & nights in the pastry kitchen.
How off topic can this be?

Ooh, 1/2 day Fridays sound lovely! That Caramel coffee cake sounds like something people at my office would enjoy.

Posted: 6/30/05 at 11:23pmI started baking when I was a young kid, but hardly ever bake now. My wife is an excellent baker.

Posted: 6/30/05 at 11:54pmI'm baking cheesecake right now! I'm going with friends to a cabin for the weekend, and I always feel like a bad guest if I don't bring something- the problem is, my springform is smaller than normal, so I have to make 2, which is going to take forever- - but I love making cheesecake. Smushing grahamcrackers is always fun!
re: Back to Baking Tonight#10
Posted: 6/30/05 at 11:57pmI think I'll bake tomorrow if I'm not too tired after work. Something simple- cookies or apple pie, maybe.

Posted: 6/30/05 at 11:58pmI'm rarely in the mood to bake. I'm making a pizza dip to bring to my friends this weekend. Not sure what else.

Posted: 7/1/05 at 12:01amMmmm...I loved baked dips - I have a recipie for a lovely 3 bean and cheese dip that is quite nice on tortillas, so maybe i'll whip that up as well.

Posted: 7/1/05 at 12:06amI bake cheesecakes, all the time. Recently, I stopped making them in a springform pan, and using graham cracker for the crust. I now buy Keebler's Shortbread crusts. Everybody thinks they are better. Far easier and they ARE better. Try it. Just make your usual filling, and fill the crusts. Perfect.

Posted: 7/1/05 at 12:10amYou really like them better? I just always loved the homemade crusts- but next time, maybe i'll go for store-bought- it it's easy and tasty, I see no reason to get graham cracker crumbs and butter stuck all over me!
re: Back to Baking Tonight#15
Posted: 7/1/05 at 12:13amIt's not so much that it is store bought vs. homemade. It's shortbread vs. graham cracker. Shortbread beats graham! The Keebler crust are really good. I've never baked anything that wasn't from sractch, but I'm all for ease, when I find something just as good.

Posted: 7/1/05 at 12:15amJose, that reminds me of my Hungarian grandmother's ultimate Poppy Seed Loaf--no icing, of course, that would be sacrilege. She also made the perfect strudel (apple, pumpkin, blueberry, cheese) with phyllo dough. Sort of a Mitteleuropa version of Greek kopita.
