Ballads?

So what technically is a ballad. I'm pretty sure I know, but I'm not for sure sure. What does it mean an up tempo song and a ballad in CONTRASTING style? Does that mean happy and then sad? IDK. I just wanna make sure.

In it's simplest form, a ballad is emotional and legato (sustained notes).

It means that one could be contemporary and one classic. Or one comedic and one not. Or one a character piece and one an ingenue or leading man piece. You get the idea.
