Congress bows to Bush... is this the Congress that we elected....? I went broke, sweat blood, and worked 20 hour days on a Congressional campaign in the 2006 cycle -- here's just a little insight on the overall strategy of the DCCC: none. zero. nada.
The DCCC, which was headed by Rahm Emanuel did a piss poor job of coalescing the Party around a single agenda. Back when he was selected the anti-war sentiment among the electorate was not as strong as it was in the months leading up to the November election-- but when over the summer when it became clear this election would in fact become a referendum on the war he failed unite the Democratic and run with a purpose of ending the war.
It became a pissing contest between the DCC and the DNC. Emanuel played tag team, target district politics, sinking money only into selected districts and throwing the rest of the candidates under the bus -- in direct contract to Howard Dean stated goals upon becoming the Party chair, which was to run a 50 state strategy.
On the bright side Progressive Voters Network is teaming up with Dean's 50 state strategy and are already working on the ground with the DCCC to mobilizable. However, I fear that the leadership buckling after one veto may be a little too much to overcome...
That said one has to wonder -- if the polls show Americans are as dissatisfied with the situation in Iraq -- how come that isn't resulting in noise? I've worked in Senate/Congressional offices...every call is logged in --- if their offices were deluged by the angry 60-65% of the population believe me they would have the political will to fight on for redeployment- no matter how petulant President Bush chooses to be.
Therefore, I must lay a large amount of blame on the electorate -- we have the right....
No.
Wait.
We have the
duty to petition our Representatives -- afterall, they work for us. So while I do think Congress failed miserably today, I also believe the citizens failed.
