Be honest please........

So, i want to share something that's happening to me right now, i am a musical theatre nut really, i've been preparing myself to get into any academy possible, taking voice lessons at bronx conservatory of music, i have a recital on saturday also, my teacher said that i am a good singer, but i went to an amda audition on sep 07 but got a letter from them inviting me to audition again next year after i get more exprience and traning and still i feel so down about that. A person told me that maybe because of the fact that i am latin it's harder for me to get in and should try again but if i dont get it next time then i should try to consider another profession but for me acting and singing is my life, so i really need some advice, i mean, my audition was good, if you ask me, problably my monologue wasn't that great but still was good and i sang really good so i don't understand what happend, i am going crazy here, i was also thinking that maybe they look more for the acting part then the singing part when they make a decision for admission or do you need to give half and half to get in? i hear amda is easy to get into but i didn't make it in my first audition even thou people tell me i can sing. If someone has been attending amda please let me get some tips for my next audition, i am planning on taking acting lessons just in case that was the problem on my audition. Anything could really help. Thanks

re: Be honest please........

1. They told you to come back next year - if they thought you weren't worth it they wouldn't have bothered telling you that and just not given you any feedback at all.

2. Competition is extensive for colleges and jobs in this profession, best to get used to rejection now. You will audition 50 times and maybe 1 or 2 of those will land you a job. That tends to be the norm.

3. In the UK it is commong for people to apply 2 or 3 years running after high school before MAYBE getting into a decent acting or MT college. About 5000 people apply for like 100 places. The odds are harsh. You are not alone. Even for places that are apparently "easy" to get into (and I would always be wary of such statements), there will still be thousands applying hoping for a place.

4. If you personally feel you were not sufficiently prepared (whether it's acting, singing or dance) then that will also show in an audition, whether subconsciously or not. Work your nuts off for a year, push yourself as hard as you can, do all you can, be DIFFERENT and don't try and copy anyone, develop your own style - and try again.

5. I personally think the Latin issue has nothing to do with it, plenty of ethnic people get places all the time.

6. Being good is not good enough anymore. Many people are good. You need to be great. Being "able to sing" doesn't get you MT work, many people can sing. There is a lot more to it.

7. You will be out of work more than in work, so best to think of an alternative way to pay your rent while you spend this year re-applying.

8. Most MT colleges will place more emphazis on the acting than the singing, acting is the heart of MT and they would often rather have an actor whose singing needs work than a great singer who can't act to save their life (not saying this is you re: Be honest please........).

"If opportunity doesn't knock - build a door".

Best of luck.
