Has anyone seen this yet?
I was intrigued by the trailers, even though they fail to disclose any information about the plot of the movie.
It's a very very bizzare, strange tale about a uniquely-disfunctional family. I honestly don't know what to say about it - it's very weird.
Juliette Binoche is excellent, as always, but the use of her semi-accent here really bothered me. Richard Gere is solid, as are the two actors that play their kids - they deliver excellent performances.
I managed to leave this movie - although it's far too long - slightly and strangely moved. The weirdness' blame shouldn't fall on the choppy film, but on the equally bizzare novel. Despite me finding something quite beautiful about the movie, the focus of the movie is a bit shifty and - like everything else - random.
The screenplay, however, has a definite shot at an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay.
Why did the use of her semi accent bother you?
i haven't seen it yet, but studied the book in my American Novel class. the only thing bothering me is Chali being a woman instead of a man, the plot is interesting enough without adding "sexual" tension for the son

Is this worth seeing? I saw the Ebert and Roeper review on tv -- Ebert loved it (esp. the little girl), and Roeper thought it was awful. The clips they played made me really want to see it, but...the lukewarm reviews have me confused.
You should see it - it's actually slightly fulfilling.
Popcultureboy: Why do you think a half-accent would bother me? These are American people living in California - not French immigrants who managed to erase their accents (except for the mother.)
Did they not bother to write in a reason for her having an accent? I mean, if every Jean Claude Van Damme movie can do it......
