Under section 37B of the contract signed by him, it states quite clearly that all offers shall become null and void if - and you can read it for yourself in this photostatic copy - "I, the undersigned, shall forfeit all rights, privileges, and licenses herein and herein contained," et cetera, et cetera..."Fax mentis incendium gloria cultum," et cetera, et cetera..."Memo bis punitor delicatum"! It's all there, black and white, clear as crystal! You stole fizzy lifting drinks. You bumped into the ceiling which now has to be washed and sterilized, so you get nothing! You lose! Good day sir!

It is, it is-- I speak from experience. You just have to remember it's not about you. Being fired doesn't mean you are a bad person or even a bad employee. You can move on to another job and suceed beyond your wildest dreams. Don't get down!

Wow, thanks. I didn't really expect this thread to make me feel better, but it has. I rarely post here, but I read all of your posts compulsively. I really liked that job!

I'm with you. After being let go from my job 2.5 years ago after having been with the firm for 14 years, I literally could not get out of bed. I knew the cutbacks were happening and received early warning that I would be let go, but it still didn't stop it from hurting when I was officially terminated. Hang in there.

On the flip side, I ended up with a very generous severance package and now work for a firm and two bosses who appreciate me a lot more than my former firm ever did. So much so, they fought for me to stay when I was offered a job at another firm several months ago.

I was laid off from my company that I was at for 3 years. I was really upset. 6 months later they were calling asking for me to come back. I made some outrageous demands, and they met them. I never in a million years would have thought I'd be back at this job. So keep your chin up, you never know what could happen!

I would advise you examine the issue or issues that led to your termination, though, because that could help you in the future. Were you fired or just laid off? At any rate, add my voice to the chorus of support.

Just about every job I've been fired from--uhm, quite a few--led to a better work experience.

The big boss presented it as a mixture of both being laid off and being fired. I would have been laid off in May automatically, because the theater is being renovated. But it is December. She claims part of the reason is a recent controversy that happened, which was not completely my fault. Blah. Don't worry, I am analyzing and analyzing and I will learn from this.

true. i wasn't fired for doing a BAD job, but i knew i wasn't doing an EFFECTIVE job. i certainly learned from the experience.

See, the problem (and the glory)with being a temp was I could never be fired.
However, on the same day the VP of the company was angling to have me come work directly for her, the head of HR got a bug up her butt and had me blacklisted. Whatever she said to my temp agency was so bad they never sent me out on another gig, either. I guess that amounts to a big fat firing.

Well, at any rate, it sucks and I feel for you. I was in a quit or get fired situation at a job a few years ago. Leaving that job turned out to be the best thing in the world for me, so I hope this turns out the same for you.

being let go for either of the two reasons is tough. I feel for you, but I have found that when this has happened to me, I've always ended up with a better job......may take time, but has always happened for me.

Broadway words of wisdom on getting fired (applicable to other rotten situations in life):

Sondra Lee, the original Tiger Lily in the Mary Martin "Peter Pan," told me that Jerome Robbins, who fired more dancers than any other choreographer, said that being fired was "a bitter pill to swallow but you SH*T it out the other end." Vivid but true.

(Sondra said that to me after I was fired from something.)

I've only been fired once and it was an absolutely horrible experience; especially since I was essentialy told that I was being fired due to another worker's lack of performance. However, leaving that job is one of the best things that happened to me. You never know what kind of amazing opportunity will present itself. Take a few days to mope and be sad, then square your shoulders and face the world again. I wish you the best of luck!

Hang in there Effie! I was "downsized" (horrible term...) from three jobs in a row that I really liked. Now I am in a field completely different from what I was doing, making three times the money with benefits, and looking back I don't think I enjoyed that original field of work after all. It all works out in the end.

Effie, I hear ya. I made the move to be self-employed after a client's promise of x amount of work... mere weeks after leaving my job and freelancing for them, their higher-up decided to immediately cut all freelancing work and bring all the work in-house. I was devastated... and am still temping while searching for a permanent job. Believe me, I know the "yikes! now what?" feeling - HUGE HUGS from me to you!
