i have loved Ben Folds for an extremely long time. every single freaking song. from Ben Folds Five days to single album...to bootleg cover songs. :)

I will reiterate what I said on this thread ages ago.
Ben Folds is one of the only pop writers from the last 20 years I feel not only should write an original musical, but could do it very well.

That's not necessarily what I find would make his show work, but I do think he would be far more effective at illuminating character were he to write songs for specific characters. His current pop work is really more ABOUT characters than BY them. Still, he'd do it...and very theatrically, I think.
Glad to see you think the same, though, Matthius. :)
One of my favorite stories of his has to be Fred Jones Pt. 2.

it's a beautiful song. i also live the "prequel" to it. haha..i can play fred jones part 2 on the piano! :) ...i TRY to play loads of others..but haha..alas, i am much better at LISTENING and singing along with them than playing the piano part to them :)

Well, at least you can play PART of it. I can't play piano at all and the thought of accompanying myself on the oboe...well...:)
By the way, do you have the live recording I mentioned of Rufus and Ben doing "Careless Whisper?"

Folds writes great story songs, and it would be interesting to see him try to write those songs in the characters' voices instead. Too bad it's never happening.

Well, you're likely right, Plum, although I did listen to him on Fresh Air many years ago and he told the interviewer he'd love to try his hand at writing a musical.

just got the rereleased BenFoldsFive album. i love his solo work but DAMN! this was great! he is now on the top of my list as favs!
