I just noticed that somebody posted a better quality version of Bernadette's performance from the Tony Awards. The clip has been available on YouTube for a few years, but the sound and picture quality weren't as good as this version which was just added in January.
What a performance. Hands down my favorite Rose.
Bernadette Peters - 5 Mins Prior to Robbery
I'm surprised this thread hasn't been deleted.
Are the mods sleeping again?
Why would it be deleted?
You know what? I don't think anyone's ever said this before, but I think she was miscast and not up to the part vocally.
Rose really should be played by someone like Patti LuPone, don't you think?
Just my two cents.
You know what? I've never been a fan of BP's but I had an afternoon free and I got a half price ticket for this at TKTS. I had a terrible seat in one of the boxes and with all of that going against it - I was completely floored by her Rose. She was so incredible that afternoon that I could hardly speak. I specifically said 'that afternoon' because I heard that the quality of her performance was not consistent. I'm just grateful I got to see her on one of her better days. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen it done better.
(And to be perfectly honest - I wouldn't cross the street for PL)
I thought Bernadette's "Reader's Digest" version of Rose's Turn at the Tony's was thrilling... but from what I understand, it NEVER sounded like that or had that much energy and focus during the actual run.
On the Tony telecast, Bernadette hadn't gone through 2-plus hours of playing Mama Rose prior to belting that abbreviated number out of the park. At the end of a usual evening, it was more like Rose's Limp To The Finish Line.
And Patti's too old for the part. Of course they could help her out by wigging her (please!), and slathering on some makeup. She looks like she's balding in in so many of the photos I've seen.
The night I saw it - not long before it closed, mind you - she hit it out of the park and beyond. She made a believer out of this doubter.
It's just that Patti LuPone has the right voice and the right personality for the part.
Bernadette couldn't sing the part and she played Rose more like Baby June! LOL! LOL! LOL!
Somebody ought to put Patti LuPone in a Broadway revival of Gypsy, so the world can finally see the part as it was meant to be played.
Dude, I would kill to see that.
Do you think she would sign?

I finally heard "Rose's Turn" yesterday for the first time, and i loved it.
I can't wait to see GYPSY at some point!
Not to toot my own av, but Ann Crumb would be a killer Rose.
So would I
No one was questioning that, Diva.
Besty, I loved the "Reader's Digest" comment.
I loved this performance, love my '03 GYPSY cast recording to death, love my little '03 GYPSY DVD, and rarely listen to any other Rose on my iPod.
Now when is that Donna Murphy gonna star in a revival? As someone on ATC said, at this rate we're gonna be due for a GYPSY revival in December anyways, I already found the new Madame Rose
What a great April day!
I flew in for a matinee of NINE and an evening performance of GYPSY! NINE was miraculous.
I loved the production of GYPSY but I did feel like I needed to help Peters up on to that stool to steal her dad's plaque. She needed a hand that night.
I saw her final performance and she was flawless.

In 10 years, I'll bet Audra McDonald does the role.
I fall into the Peters-didn't-cut-it-for-me camp. I love seeing that gal on stage, but sometime, regardless of abundant talent and skill... you are just miscast. And to me, she was and couldn't she couldn't surmount that.
Added to the that. The production itself was thrill-less.
I honestly thought it was as borderline embarrassment.
I with you BFB.
I thought the whole thing was a mediocre show, at best. Serviceable, but nothing fantastic about it.

I knew we'd get back to the "I loved it" / "Not me!" debate- but I loved it. Closing weekend, had a free night in town, Saw it on TKTS, dragged the Boyfriend (Who had NO IDEA what Gypsy was even about), and she knocked it out of the park- one of the greatest performances I've ever seen.
And I never felt like she was tired because she'd been singing for two hours- I thought she was exhausted because she'd been dragging two ungrateful kids through Show Biz for 20 years and was at the end of her rope.
But she was exhausted from the start.
Rose dragged them around by choice.
Most people were trying to talk her into settling down.
Wow. Donna Murphy. What a great idea.
"And I never felt like she was tired because she'd been singing for two hours- I thought she was exhausted because she'd been dragging two ungrateful kids through Show Biz for 20 years and was at the end of her rope."
There are these little lines of dialogue before she sings Rose's Turn, talking about how if she ever let out what was inside of her, there wouldn't be signs big enough or lights bright enough! Rose's Turn is just that... her TURN. Not her chance to be exhausted from it all. Not her time to throw in the towel. Good God. She's furious and hurt and SHE'LL SHOW 'EM ALL. THAT's what the song is about. Of course, she chokes on her own self-promises, in the middle of the "why did I do it" part... but she picks herself up and finishes "FOR ME" in a HUGE way.
Anything less than that is...
...LESS than that.
