I'm doing a project in my film studies class right now, and i'm looking for really good musicals to show parts of. Any suggestions?
Singing in the Rain
Oliver
Sound of Music
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
1776
Cabaret
Hair
Oliver!
The Sound of Music
1776
West Side Story
My Fair Lady
The King and I
The best.
I think it's fair game to include any that won Best Picture or were nominated for Best Picture (so add Chicago, Gigi, An American in Paris, Moulin Rouge, etc.)
Don't know if it's the best, but I love An American in Paris.
I would also like to add "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" to the group
Hedwig is DEF worth mentioning, and I would also want to add Dancer in the Dark.
And, imho, Evita had something to do with the resurgence of musical theatre on film---Moulin Rouge gets the credit.
Then there's my favorite movie of all time, which for some reason totally escaped me before: All That Jazz. Brilliant film.

"Star Struck". "This is Spinal Tap". "Can't stop the Music".
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
There is the perfection of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, WEST SIDE STORY, THE MUSIC MAN and MARY POPPINS. Everything else is inferior. No matter what AFI or some other trumped-up pannel of "expertts" says. Doesn't mean there aren't some entertaining films among the others.
Wow... four good ones and the rest are crap?
Nice philosophy.
I don't agree with that at all.
I don't agree with it, either. That isn't what I said.
There is an AFI list somewhere. "Meet Me in St. Luis" is one of my personal favorites. The film is just stunning, the camera just loves Judy.

Maybe not the best, but ones I enjoy
West Side Story and My Fair Lady
And hell, why not Reefer Madness? It's a new classic.
