Posted: 12/10/07 at 12:09amI will be in NYC next week. I want to get tickets for one of the NYC sightseeing buses. I thought this would be the best way to see the major attractions in the shortest amount of time. Does anyone have any recommendations? Which bus company is the best?

Posted: 12/10/07 at 6:40amI would advise against those "tour" buses. I found that I got to see more walking around the city than I did on a tour bus. As on a tour bus you don't get to stop and actually see the beauty of NYC, you just drive right past with a guy saying "and over on your right is the Empire State Building" and in two seconds you're past it. Plus you save more money. Just my opinion of course.

Posted: 12/10/07 at 6:46amI think that with those double decker open buses you can hop on-hop off. Meaning, that you can get off at a site that you want to explore and then catch a later bus and continue the tour ! Though nothing beats walking, if you have limited time, it is a good solution, though I've never done them !

Posted: 12/10/07 at 7:57amWatch out for the ticket sellers for those buses. Some of them will rip you off if they get the chance. We had some free time one day and decided to try one. I handed the guy two twenties. He turned around to talk to someone and turned back to me with two fives in his hand, claiming that's what I'd given him. Two other people I know have had similar experiences.

If you're going to book a tour on a bus, do it inside one of those tour centers ahead of time, where you can pay with a credit card and be assured that you know what you're getting and that you will not be ripped off.
At least when you pay with a credit card, if you end up getting cheated somehow, you have an easy way to dispute it. If you hand out cash to someone, you have no guarantee of anything whatsoever.

Posted: 12/10/07 at 10:28amWhen I first starting going to NYC, I used to do the Grayline New York Sightseeing tour (the red doubledeckers). There are over dozen stops around the city and you can hop on and off as much as you want, depending on which ticket you buy. I think it's a great way to get an overall view of the city.
