Apart from some technical noms, The Passion of the Christ was virtually ignored. How long before Gibson or his idolators of the religious right start screaming "Jewish Hollywood conspiracy"?
Neither was Fahrenheit: 911. Let the hysteria begin! (unless it was ineligible or Moore pulled it for some reason I don't know about)
It shouldn't even have gotten the technical noms though, really. A blanket snub rather than a few technical nods would have been far more satisfying.
Moore made the big mistake of not submitting Fahrenheit 9/11 for Best Documentary, thinking or hoping that it would be considered for Best Picture, I imagine. Too bad. In the Documentary category, it probably would have won.
dammit, rath beat me to it. eh, f*** it, i'll post it anyway.
which is three more noms than f911 got.
Oh well, Moore. That was a bit of egomanically-based bad judgement, eh?
That, along with getting a gazillion Razzie nominations, must be quite a kick in the teeth for Mr Moore.
On the other hand, Fahrenheit not being nommed means that Morgan Spurlock has the award sewn up.
Ah, that's true. And Super Size Me was pretty damned wonderful.
in defense of moore (who never thought you'd read me ever type those words? show of hands) i believe that he did it or at least said he pulled it so that he could show it on tv in time to influence the election. i believe, and i'm positive there's at least one person here who will know for sure, the plan was to show it on showtime or maybe european tv or al jazeera...something, anyway, showing it on tv woould have invalidated it for the best documentary award. not that hubris had nothing to do with it, but he did have a stated reason.
Comparing the number of nominations that THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST received (3) to the number that FAHRENHEIT 911 received (0) is assinine. A documentary is just not going to get nominated in certain categories (cinematography, score, make-up, etc...). That said, PASSION got nominated for what it deserved to get nominated for. But it won't win s#it.
And papa is correct. Fahrenheit was ineligible for consideration. Michael Moore made a deal with Pay For View (who later reneged) to air it right before the Presidential election, thus disqualifying it from the competition.
Super Size Me was ok, but not nearly as good as Tarnation. Was Tarnation somehow ineligible? It got rave reviews across the board and won awards in Los Angeles and London.
That is exactly the story behind F/911's not being eligible for Best Doc.
And, the razzie nominations for F9/11 are in no way an insult to the film or Moore--they are an insult to this administration.
