Blood Sugar

Posted: 12/12/05 at 3:42pmDoes anyone know a lot about blood sugar. I haven't eaten all day, wasn't really hungry, and suddenly got dizzy and had a panic attack. Can this be related to low blood sugar?

Posted: 12/12/05 at 3:45pmYes, it probably is blood sugar related. You should not go without eating.

Once, during rehearsals, I fainted for the first time in my life - and hadn't eaten in several hours. It's not fun. I also get bad headaches. I tend to eat something high in protein if I feel it coming on - nuts, or peanut butter is good. Often only a piece of fruit is available - but it's better to get more protein in you. I do much better when I start the day with a big breakfast which is well rounded - eggwhites, some veggies, a whole-wheat english muffin or bowl of oatmeal, and juice. Speak to your doctor about it and he/she will help you decide how to best combat the fatigue associated with low blood-sugar attacks.

For high protein, cheese may also work. I had a friend who was hypoglycemic who never went anywhere without a few of those Bonbel cheeses in her possession.

Though, um...it's worth noting that lightheadedness, dizziness, and fainting are also associated with low blood pressure. Not that I'd know anything about that.
