I saw this film last Thursday night at a screening in San Francisco. It is a riot and there are some scenes that are beyond description!

"I've lost everything! Luis, Marty, my baby with Chris, Chris himself, James. All I ever wanted was love." --Sheridan Crane "Passions" ------- "Housework is like bad sex. Every time I do it, I swear I'll never do it again til the next time company comes."--"Lulu" from "Can't Stop The Music" ----- "When the right doors didn't open for him, he went through the wrong ones" - "Sweet Bird of Youth" ------------ --------- "Passions" is uncancelled! See NBC.com for more info.

Were I not filming my TV show this weekend, I would so be there opening night. But I have to wait until Monday! Argh!

It looks to be the greatest mix of balls-out comedy and touching drama since THE LIFE AQUATIC!!!!!

O I am dying to see it but it's not playing anywhere near me! Apparently, early testing made the studios think this film had "Peaked too early" and they cut it from 2000 to 800 screens-- giving the extra 1200 to Santa Clause 3.

It is foul, offensive, and hilarious. I couldn't hear a word of what the other people in the movie said--Baron Cohen's every utterance had the entire theatre screaming with laughter. And that wrestling scene...I've said enough.

I'm just sick of hearing about this movie- I feel like I'm being attacked by a bunch of cooler-than-thou fanboys. "You will like this movie and you will find it the funniest thing ever or else you're an uptight little PC twerp." I don't like feeling on the defensive going into a film- I don't even know if I'll be offended, but I know I'm not supposed to be or else I'm "unhip". Anyway, I always liked Ali G better.

I loved it. I don't know if I was having too much fun, but it ended way too soon. I've seen clips of cut material from the film & I hope they will be included in the DVD. And the wrestling scene....I thought I had a mild heart attack!!!!

Anyone else excited for the Reno 911! trailer???

Now Plum, the movie only came out three days ago... I hear what you're saying, but the movie IMHO lives up to the hype, IF you like that kind of humor.

And Cohen makes the "Jackass" boys (whom I love) look like pvssies.

The movie is really about the power of the camera and the nature of societal customs. It's a highbrow concept executed in a lowbrow fashion.

I saw the movie Saturday night and couldn't stop laughing. But I felt really guilty about laughing.....God, so much to offend.

A man I know was featured in the film and had NO idea who Sacha Baron Cohen was and had never seen Ali G. His cluelessness is quite evident on the screen and it was genuine. His kids have since clued him in. They now think he's cool.

And there were a couple of VERY touching moments--it's a great acting job.

Some of the best lines are the unscripted responses Borat receives--he also exposes alot of prejudice and fear from people of all walks of life, like the boys in the RV or the old cowboy at the rodeo.

Minor Spoilers:

I saw this with my boyfriend Saturday night. I'm not sure why this guy is so popular. I always felt like I was the only one that did not find “Ali G” funny at all. I get what he is doing, but it was just never funny enough, it seemed very contrived. Some people have told me "oh it's British humor" and you just don't get it. I kind of resented that blanket statement because I do enjoy quite a few British television shows and films. Though I do tire of the elitist sensibility I often find in it. That's why it's funny I guess, but it gets tired . In-it? Sometimes I need some stupid humor.

Anyways so I saw Borat! It was very funny and is more American than anything else. I told my friend it was a Ben Stiller gross-out film only done well, which is something I've longed for. As John Water's always says, “no one thought for one second that was real cum in Cameron Diaz hair” (Something About Mary). It was a stretch. In this film, we believe mostly everything we see. (Except the bear and the mockumentary).

The only major problem I had with the movie was the confusing presentation. At first I thought it was going to be shot like a documentary, and I think I saw the camera crew in some scenes. Anyways it doesn't make sense because Borat is obviously alone in some scenes. The suspension of disbelief is tough for anyone that understands film convention.

Also…there was a very uncomfortable scene where he insulted a woman that I thought was really cruel. It's funny, but in a way that probably really hurt her feelings.

If this film is a wake up call to Americans on how backwards we are, then that's really very sad. The jokes about racist Americans and ethnocentric thinking should (at this point) not be a surprise to any of us.

I was in an NYC audience and people were laughing at the conditions under which Borat lived. (Not the gags i.e. Horse-car). That's what the developing world really looks like, and it's not really that funny. A lot of the south and midwest looks like that too. This laughing made me wonder about irony and the making of this film. Borat really does get a jab in at everyone, even the snobs (NYC snobby audience.)

One more note, this character Borat isn’t all that original Andy Kauffman used to do a “foreign” character that confused people on SNL.

It’s good light fun though, I dunno what all the hype is about. It should have been an HBO special not a feature film. The trailers for the movie were not funny, they made it look really lame. The film “Hacking Democracy” should have been given a theatrical release instead.

I couldn't disagree more, me...it's not a gross-out picture at all--it's about social comfort. And of course it's uncomfortable when he insults people, just as it is when the Americans portrayed express contempt for Muslims, gays, or black people. That's the point.

I admit, it's obviously not for all tastes, just as any film with integrity or originality.

I'm also not sure why you were confused by its structure--it's a mockumentary--we know that Borat is really an actor and that no such person or television show exists.

And if you were offended, then I would like to ask you, what did you think you were seeing? You've obviously seen DA ALI G SHOW and should know Borat's brand of humor--many of the scenes in the film were lifted from vignettes on the series.

Then again, what the hell do I know?

>>...it's not a gross-out picture at all--it's about social comfort

I thought it was gross out film. SH*T in a bag? That's social comfort joke? Isn't gross out social comfort? That hotel scene was gross. I wont give it away:)

>>>I'm also not sure why you were confused by its structure--it's a mockumentary--we know that Borat is really an actor and >>that no such person or television show exists.

I did not understand why the documentary in the Borat world stopped in some parts, but the cameras didn’t? I wonder about the crew shooting this film. I did not understand why the “film crew” stayed with him and he was supposed to be alone? The producer left, why didn’t the crew talk? Did they leave too? It just didn't make sense to me. This was a break from the convention Borat started in the film. There were shots of Borat driving… from the crew driving beside him? There was a shot when he went to the prostitute’s house and knocked on the door. The camera was on the inside of the house. That would mean the prostitute knew he was coming, but she didn’t. It was very obvious what parts were scripted, and to me it broke the suspension of disbelief.

I’m not saying this makes the movie bad, the “story” actually keeps it moving.

>>And if you were offended, then I would like to ask you, what did you think you were seeing?

I wasn't offended at all by the film. I thought I was seeing something like Mr. Bean, which it was, kinda Mr. Bean meets Waiting for Guffman.
