re: Both Sides Now

Beave, I was in a Joni mood a couple of weekends ago and listened to that song over and over and over! It's a beautiful song!

I'm glad you had such a wonderful trip to Dublin...it's never easy to leave a wonderful vacation! But, when you get home you'll have more time to tell us all about it!

Enjoy your last night there. For now!

...and tomorrow we will welcome you home!

Have a safe return. How ironic that I knew you were referring to the song and immediately played it in my mind.

re: Both Sides Now

So did I, Dottie! A song from my 'youth'... I remember how much I loved that song, and learned to play it on the guitar.

re: Both Sides Now

I hope it's the cut off the "Both Sides Now" album. That version is the best.

Dublin's a nice town. Wish I was there right now.

"Goth - it's the newer version with a full orchestra. I think it's from the film "Love Actually".

Yes, that's the one. A great rendition of that song. Love the horn work on that version. And her voice is great, it's deep and she sings as if she's weary. Great version of the song.

Beav - I've been WONDERING where you were - and now I know. That's what I get for not paying attention to the board as much!

Can't wait to hear about your trip - and find out when you'll be in LA next - hopefully when we are here!

I am 1/2 (my father's side), but my mother does not even acknowledge her German side. So it is like we are 100% Irish in our family. My wife is Welsh, Scottish and English.

re: Both Sides Now

My parents were each 1/2 Italian, so we never acknowledged the Irish side. It wasn't until I worked on a show where all the actors were from Ireland that I started to discover and fall in love with my Irish heritage and culture.

Rath, that is funny because I only marginally recognize my Irish heritage.

I'm also part Irish and I urge you to take a trip to Ireland. It's wonderful when you hear the music and see the dancing and experience the culture.

Have always loved that song! I remember singing it at a school concert "way back when"

I love too many of Joni's songs to list. :)

re: Both Sides Now

Judy Collins did a great cover of it as well.

re: Both Sides Now

the version they played in the movie 'Love Actually' was exquisitely emotional!

edit: is that a word? exquisitely?

re: Both Sides Now

Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere, I've looked at clouds that way.
But now they only block the sun, they rain and snow on everyone.
So many things I would have done but clouds got in my way.

I've looked at clouds from both sides now,
From up and down, and still somehow
It's clouds illusions I recall.
I really don't know clouds at all.

Moons and Junes and ferris wheels, the dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real; I've looked at love that way.
But now it's just another show. You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know, don't give yourself away.

I've looked at love from both sides now,
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall.
I really don't know love at all.

Tears and fears and feeling proud to say "I love you" right out loud,
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds, I've looked at life that way.
But now old friends are acting strange, they shake their heads, they say I've changed.
Something's lost but something's gained in living every day.

I've looked at life from both sides now,
From win and lose, and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall.
I really don't know life at all.

...those lyrics are pure poetry!

re: Both Sides Now

I fell in love with it when I heard it on "Love Actually," one of my favorite movies. That song's gotten me through a lot, strangely... it was oddly comforting to listen to when I broke off my engagement with my fiance - wow, has it been a year already that I've been single? WOW... anyway, I would curl up in bed and listen to that song and it would help me cry. Amazing, amazing song.
