What is a good product to get the messy spikey look without making it really hard(hairspray) and not greasey like gel?

try a wax based product ... FX (most drug stores) makes some of the best ... and if you want to spend the $$ "bed head" makes this stuff called Rubber Rage or Mastermind which holds but doesnt give that icky feeling ... its what i use.

Yes, a wax product is very good. More expensive than gel, though. And takes awhile to wash out (his hair might still feel waxy even after shampooing it).

depends on how long his hair is, if it's longer than an inch or two--the wax won't work as well--it's best for short hair...i sometimes use a combination of a few drops of vitamin e oil to a small amount of a thick gel or a putty, mix them and rub them in....vitamin e oil is also a good moisturizer for guys with buzzed or shaved heads...i used to work at a very chi-chi salon...but not for long--what a nightmare

I would use pomade...i love that stuff. It lets you mold your hair but without the feel and look of gel or hairspray.
