Breast Cancer/The Mammogram Controversey

Breast Cancer/The Mammogram Controversey

Have any of you heard about The Mammogram Controversey? Apparently there are people out there that opose mammograms because they believe that they can cause more harm than help. I still say that mammograms are a wonderful invention. It saved my moms life. She was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and because it was detected really early by a mammogram she had they were able to perform a lumpectomy on her and remove it. She underwent radiation for 6 weeks and is now about to celebrate her 1 year anniversary of being free of breast cancer!
Anyone else have any stories or opinions on this topic? (I'm writing a research paper on this that is due on Wednesday for my English class and am interested in hearing others feelings on this.)

Trust me. A Mammogram can save your life.

And, that's wonderful news about your mother, RoseActress.

As do I.

RoseActress, I have posted on a couple of threads (you can do a search), that I had a mammogram when I was in my early 20's and it detected my breast cancer. I am a survivor. It's been 20 years. re: Breast Cancer/The Mammogram Controversey

Addy: I bow down to Mammograms cause I don't know where I would be without a firend like you! You are truely and angel and I love you!

Rose: Your mom is lucky! And so are you, I had a few family members that were not so lucky.

Wow congrats! Have you ever heard of the Relay for Life? The American Cancer Society puts this on all of the US. Its a 24 hour relay event, a fundraiser to support the search for a cure for cancer. The past two years I was a team captain for a teen team that my synogague supported. My father was on the supporter's team and my mother was on the survivor's team and my sister was on the teen's team. At these events you always hear wonderful stories like yours. If anyone ever has an opportunity to be involved in this wonderful event I highly reccomend it!

hmm this is interesting...how exactly are people proposing that mammograms can be harmful? My grandmother just celebrated her first year anniversary of being cancer free and my mother has cancer (not breast cancer though, so as for many, this issue hits close to home. As is true is so many other cases, a mammogram saved my grandmother's life. I can't imagine what harm people are proposing, but I would guess that this harm could not outweigh the benefits of mammograms. I actually participate in both the Relay for Life, the Light the Night Walk and the Swim Across America benefit and think it is imperative to raise awareness about the benefits of early detection. It would really be a shame if this turns out to be a fruitless claim and actually stops women from getting mammograms...

The controversy has to do with the level of radiation...as well as a push to try to provide better prevention, screening methods and treatments.

And congratulations to your grandmother.
