Brideshead Revisited (2008)#1

Posted: 6/4/08 at 8:53pm

Just watched the trailer.

Normally remakes don't bother me. I try to have a "it is what it is" attitude.

But this just looks dreadful when compared to the novel and the PERFECT Granada Television series.

Is it me or did they reduce Brideshead to creaky sexual melodrama?

Did they ever think they coould improve upon the PBS mini-series?

The mini-series is truly one of the best films... television or otherwise ever made.

The trailer actually makes me sad.

However, it looks like they used the same house (if you can call such a thing a "house") that was used in the mini-series.

Evelyn Waugh apparently made no secret that his inspiration for Brideshead Castle was Castle Howard in North Yorkshire, so it perhaps isn't surprising that they should film it there once again. Although I agree that if they're going to play fast and loose with the book they could equally have done so with the locations.

They seem to be using the garden front as the entrance front as well, which is also rather odd. The actual approach from the other side is much more impressive.

The house was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh who was also a controversial playright of the time and whose works are still performed today (The Relapse, The Provoked Wife) in the UK. Quite a versatile guy.
