Bring 'em on - Unless it is Helen Thomas

Bush has this primal fear of answering questions posted by Helen Thomas. It is almost funny:

"President Bush today again avoided taking a question from White House doyenne Helen Thomas during his 45-minute press conference, even though he took questions from every reporter around her front-row, center seat.

"He's a coward," Thomas said afterward. "He's supposed to be this macho guy. He'll take on Osama bin Laden, but he won't take me on."

Thomas, who worked as the UPI White House reporter for 57 years and is now a columnist, raised her hand every time the president was concluding an answer to a reporter's question, but he never called on her."

I watched that today and the thought kept going through my mind "Where's Helen Thomas when we need her?" I had no idea she was there and it doesn't surprise me at all that he avoided her like the plague. For him, the results would have been just as fatal!

He doesn't have a primal fear, he just knows that she never listens to answers that anyone gives. She rudely interrupts. Why bother with her?

Ummm - Scott never answers the questions asked.

So, I guess her problem is she asks direct questions, and wants direct answers.

"THOMAS: I have two questions that can be dismissed with a yes or no. One, is the President going to seek any legal — more legal permission from Congress to spy on Americans without a warrant? And two, does he think, does he believe that his new designation of the spy program, terrorist surveillance, will tarnish people who are spied on and are guilty or not guilty?

MR. McCLELLAN: Let me take the first part of your question, and I think it’s important to give a clearer picture of where things are with the American people, and so I want to make a few comments about it.

THOMAS: I want to know where you stand –

MR. McCLELLAN: And I’m going to do that. I’ve already previously answered this question with reporters and stated our view; the Attorney General stated it earlier today in some interviews. This is an important tool that helps to save lives by preventing attacks. It is a limited, targeted program aimed at al Qaeda communications, as the President pointed out yesterday. This program is focused only on communications in which one person is reasonably suspected of links to al Qaeda or affiliated terrorist organizations. And it involves international communications.

I reject your characterization to suggest it’s domestic spying. That’s like saying someone making a phone call from inside the United States to another country is a domestic call. It is billed the international rate and it is labeled –

THOMAS: The law says he has to seek a court warrant.

MR. McCLELLAN: — it is labeled an international call –

THOMAS: Why doesn’t he seek a warrant? What’s the big problem?

The Shame. She wants an answer to the question.

No wonder Bush is afraid of her.

Seems to me they'd get along very well, since he doesn't seem to listen to anything anyone tells him either.

Helen was in the front row of the press room. I commented on her apperance on another thread today because the camera fell from it's support beam at the start of the conference, and they repositioned it and Helen was in full view at that point. My comment was that she looked Muppet like and after 57 plus years she should retire. Back on track though - I think she is looked upon differently now that she is a columnist and not just a corps reporter. Bush was probably just overlooking her because he does not qualify her as a valid source of reporting.

No, Helen Thomas was removed early in the administration. I'm surprised they let her in--I guess he figures he can just avoid her and her pointed questions.

Goth, if Bush is SOOOOO right about things, why can't he and Scottie boy just answer questions. What DO they have to hide?

Once again Plum - you pipe up with nonsense. I said after 57 years she should retire - not because she looks like a Muppet. Reading is fundamental - comprehension aparently is lost on some.

Once again? Where the heck did that come from?

I apologize if I misunderstood your intent, but if you wrote clearer sentences than:

i>My comment was that she looked Muppet like and after 57 plus years she should retire.

Well, maybe then I wouldn't misinterpret. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to get some dinner and do my seminar reading. (Which I will no doubt fail to comprehend. )

Coming from the poster who decided to personally insult me after all I did was disagree with what I thought was an opinion of his/hers, I don't think so. Kiss my ass.

Yeah - one would figure that from you. Everyone knows your educated but everything you post anymore is so full of condesension and snipe. Do you really feel you are better than everyone like the way you read? or are you really just a bitter little jerk. And you in no way "Just disagreed" with me - you were, indeed a bitch in the way you posted it. I could care less if you disagree - you are nothing but a faceless name to me.

My god. Have we ever even interacted before? Because I don't remember fighting with you. If you want to read all kinds of condescension into my initial post, be my guest. Normally I'm quite neurotic about how people read my posts, but if you're so determined to see the worst in everything I say, I doubt there's much I can do (or should do) to stop you.
