Broadway Bares

It's that time of year again.....Broadway Bares! Broadway Bares has become Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS' signature event held on Father's Day at Roseland Ballroom. Every year, dancers from the Broadway community come together for two performances in one night to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for this amazing organization. The event sells out every year, so the bulk of the money comes from tips during the rotation and by each dancer raising money in the Strip-A-Thon. I've set a goal of $1000 for the Strip-A-Thon, and I'm asking friends and family to help me reach that goal for Broadway Cares. For those of you who are not familiar....BCEFA money goes to people around the country living with HIV and AIDS. Their money also supports the Actors' Fund of America and the Phyllis Newman Women's Health Initiative that provides among other services, free mammograms for those in need.

A few years ago, I was a recipient of money from the Actor's Fund. I was uninsured, and I got a kidney stone while working in Wisconsin. My hospital bills totaled $30,000!!! I don't even make $30,000 in a year. With the help of my counselor at the Actors' Fund, they told me who to talk to at the hospital, and $25,000 of my bill was able to be written off. That still left me with $5,000 to pay....quite a lot for an unemployed actor. The put me in touch with various charities around New York who were able to write me checks to cover all but $1,200. As you can see, the Actors' Fund truly went to bat for me. The Actors' Fund and BCEFA is able to continue helping people in the same boat I was through events such as Broadway Bares.

Please consider donating a few dollars to support me in the Strip-A-Thon. It's kind of a tacky name, but think of it as the Jump Rope For Heart of adults. You can follow the link below to make a donation online.

Everyone should support BCEFA.

Donate and please vote for universal health care. There is no excuse. Every single American should have access to good medical care without fearing bankruptcy.

re: Broadway Bares

I raise Best12's Amen to Chita by two.

Nycdncr, you have my support. Thanks for sharing your story. What a terrific organization.

It has really hit me recently how important it is to have coverage. You get charged a lot more with out it. Recently I have had medical care. I would get a statement with the amount charged. One was for $1,500. That would be the cost if I was paying for it. The insurance company, however, paid only half and almost all of the rest was a 'charge-off' because they negotiate and get discounts. So,the insurance company was charged $700, yet if it was me all by myself, I would be charged $1,500.

Disclaimer: I'm on meds so I hope that made sense.

re: Broadway Bares

I was at a modern dance performance today (Cedar Lakes Dance Company) and they also did a speech to ask the audience to donate to Broadway Cares. I love how it's extended to outside the Broadway world to help modern/ballet dancers as well. That's awesome.

I never could resist a Strip-a-thon! Good Luck! re: Broadway Bares
Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be enbered with your old nonsense. ~ Emerson
