Broadway composers crossing over to classical

Jason Robert Brown has done some classical. His music was featured in a recent concert at Symphony Space showcasing composers who have written both for Broadway and classical pieces.

Let's see, for Brown classical they did...Mr. Broadway for Solo Piano. Ooh, I remember that! He prepared a speech to be said about it, since he couldn't be there...about how the 2 composers that influenced him the most were Gershwin and Bernstein, particularly how they both pursued Broadway and classical music, and some of their styles appeared in it. I don't know Gershwin that well, though the host tried to explain certain aspects of their music, but I could definitely tell distinct parts were certainly Bernstein influenced.

Sadly, Bernstein was not one of the 4 composers featured. I was very disappointed.

Pretty much Plum. If you want to be technical, his first large-scale composition was classical-"Symphony #1: Jeremiah" in 1943, and composed On The Town, his first musical show composition, in 1944. But yeah, the two are so close together that you could say he was focused on both forms from the start. And certainly accomplished amazing things in both forms. Just...such a genius.
