my daughter is auditiong for a broadway master class she has to have 2 contrasting songs. She is 17 She has a great belt and a great head voice, and she is always character parts. Any suggestions?
I would actually recommend only one of the songs (preferably an up-tempo one) being a character song. People want to see YOU as well as what kinds of crazy characters you can perform. This was suggested to me by my voice teacher at Northwestern...because I showed her and my class "Diva's Lament" from Spamalot (as an option for one of my songs for MT Program auditions in May). She said I have a huge voice and can do the character well, so I should do it...but that, as my contrasting piece, I should choose something really down to Earth and real.

I'm working with a voice student who is also preparing to audition for a theatre camp. I have her doing "I Speak Six Languages" from Spelling Bee and "Out of My Dreams" from Oklahoma. They are SO different!
Just a couple of words of advice.
No Sondheim. No Jason Robert Brown. Nothing from Les Miz, Phanton, Beauty and the Beast, Wicked, etc.
I would suggest going with an up-tempo character song that shows her belt voice and then a lyrical or legit soprano ballad that shows "herself."
