SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

Bush Says His Party Is Wrong to Oppose Gay Civil Unions

WASHINGTON, Oct. 25 - President Bush said in an interview this past weekend that he disagreed with the Republican Party platform opposing civil unions of same-sex couples and that the matter should be left up to the states...

Mr. Bush has previously said that states should be permitted to allow same-sex unions, even though White House officials have said he would not have endorsed such unions as governor of Texas. But Mr. Bush has never before made a point of so publicly disagreeing with his party's official position on the issue...

In an interview on Sunday with Charles Gibson, an anchor of "Good Morning America" on ABC, Mr. Bush said, "I don't think we should deny people rights to a civil union, a legal arrangement, if that's what a state chooses to do so." ABC, which broadcast part of the interview on Monday, is to broadcast the part about civil unions on Tuesday...

According to an ABC transcript, Mr. Gibson then noted to Mr. Bush that the Republican Party platform opposed civil unions.

"Well, I don't," Mr. Bush replied.

He added: "I view the definition of marriage different from legal arrangements that enable people to have rights. And I strongly believe that marriage ought to be defined as between a union between a man and a woman. Now, having said that, states ought to be able to have the right to pass laws that enable people to be able to have rights like others."

Mr. Gibson then asked, "So the Republican platform on that point, as far as you're concerned, is wrong?"

"Right," Mr. Bush replied...

We've already discussed this. Like you said to me before when you tried to embarass me, the "Search" feature is a great resource.

Jose'--in a nutshell, this is too little, too late, and too insincere. He has spent four years belittling, demeaning and dehumanizing gays. He even promised the religious bigots in his party that he would work toward a constitutional amendment depriving gays of the rights of married couples--even the rights of domestic partnerships or "incidents thereof."

Then, a week before the election, he goes on GMA and makes this disingenuous statement, expecting all "the gays" to fall in line.

Well, surprise surprise, George. This time even the Log Cabin Republicans have turned their backs on him.

++++

Only 5 more days until a new president!

Thank you, Joey, for the first thoughtful response.

You're right, it is rather late in the campaign.

Could it be that this is W's honest belief, and that his earlier public comments were solely for the most conservative members of Republicans, and uttered then at a time that his campaign strategists assessed to be the most opportune to maintain those votes?

Just wondering.

I was born and raised in Texas. I have lived in Texas through all of Bush's reign as Governor. This is a last ditch attempt to get moderate votes, plain and simple. Bush is VERY anti-gay and would never do ANYTHING pro-gay in office by choice. While he was here in texas, he spear headed an effort to ban gay marriage, civil unions, and any recognition of gay relationshoips and strengthing anti-gay sodomy laws, saying how Texas would never allow such "imoral" acts. All teh while, he spoke out publicly against anti-bestiality laws as being unneccessary.

This last-minute "moderate" tone is just like Cheney playing the Mary card before the convention. If Bush felt this way, why didn't he say it the day he interrupted daytime TV to announce his constitutional amendement? What a perfect time that would've been to demonstrate his big tent compassion. But no, gay people were not even mentioned, compassionately or otherwise. That ploy -- to distract us from Iraq and solidify the right wing base -- was all about timing. But so is everything they do. Their "big tent" Republican party opens its doors to all on special occasions, for about 30 seconds, and otherwise keeps them shut and many, many people shut out.

Mary Cheney is a trained dog for the campaign. Theydtrot her out to do tricks when they want to appeal to gay/lesbian voters to reelect them so that they can have 4 more years to pound gay men and women into the ground, then lock her up in the backyard when they want to appeal to their base and don't want teh neighbors to see her.

They are afraid that they won't get the votes of the gays and lesbians who were stupid enough to vote for him last time, which I might add they won't. They are desperate and stupid enough to think that 4 years of hatred can be wiped away with one interview. God , I hate that pathetic waste of space that masquerades as a president.
