First he says he supports civil unions, now this?
Bush Drops Gay Marriage Amendment
The man is a nutcase...
But this is good news!
He just hyped it up during the election to insure he'd get the right wing nutcase vote.
It worked.
Politics 101.
As much as I HATE his beliefs, personalitiy, actions, etc (could go on for days with what I dont like about the man), I will give it to him. HIs advisors are quite smart about what he had to do to get the votes. I know people who dislike everything about him, except his stance at the time on Gay Marriage and voted based strictly on that issue. And I guestion their intelligence every day.

Well, I won't give him anything. He can't erase the fear and hatred that he stirred up in millions of ignorant people in order to win the election. And the religious Fundies on the right are continuing to pound at gay people at a state level. Here is a link to an entry I did on one of Bush's "advisors":
http://pseudolusblog.blogspot.com/2004/12/alabama-looney-visits-top-looney.html#comments
The title is "Alabama Loony Visits Top Looney." A Bush "advisor" has introduced legislation in Alabama to ban all books and literature from publicly funded institutions (including universities) that contained gay characters, and to prohibit the use of public funds from purchasing "textbooks or library materials that recognize or promote homosexuality as an acceptable lifestyle." This "advisor" has met with Bush five times in the past four years - he isn't Cheney, but that is a lot of access for a lowly state delegate. Since this issue directly affects the theatre (Univ. of Alabama couldn't perform A CHORUS LINE), we need to keep a close eye on this legislation.
Bush is the real flip-flopper. He is STILL playing politics. If it becomes necessary to throw another bone to his "base," and if he thinks he will win, he will reverse himself immediately.

What I meant is that his advisors were deviously, manipulatively smart enough to figure the best way to get him reelected. They didnt give a rat's furry behind about dividing the country so long as he was elected. OH trust and believe, what he did sickens me.

Hey Sweetie: I get what you meant, and I don't mean to pick on you. I just hate when people give credit to people like Rove for being so evil. It's like saying "Mussolini was great - he got the trains to run on schedule - what a guy. He handed all the Italian Jews to the Nazis, but he was sooo smart." The press indulges in such things, without any sense of moral equivalency.
Also - I wanted to dispell the notion that the Republicans were going to back away from their attacks on gay people now that the election is over, because they aren't backing off. They may act in more secrecy or at a state level, but they have a base with an agenda. They are planning to introduce gay marriage bans in at least a dozen more states.
The trick is to remain vigilant without living in fear - unless you live in Alabama. (Frankly, I'm very happy I don't live there right now.)

This is further proof of Bush's stupidity. Piss off your base the week of your inauguration. WTG George!

I have to hand it to him, it was smart to keep it until now in terms of his campaign. It maddens me he felt like he could use this issue to win the votes, but, as they say, Bush was elected because of the 3 G's: Gays, Guns, and God.
Perhaps those of us who support the cause of gay equality should not be so negative about this.
I'm not so sure it stirred up anything but awareness of how big the problem (and "the enemy") really is. The argument is now out in the open, and at least Americans know that the president isn't going to push it.
People who feel strongly on either side of the issue didn't need a campaign platform to influence their thinking. It was already there.
I must say this:
For a racist, sexist, homophobic IDIOT this man hired a very good man to head his campaign.
Now we have to worry about the House, Senate, and the states. It is time to make an amendment stating that who one loves is NO ONE'S business but their own.
The Beav is precisely right. The ammendment didn't stand a chance, and a defeat would have been a terrible loss of prestige, as well as a perceived "victory" for the fags and a perceived "loss" for the right wing nut jobs.
Dropping the ammendment is only politically expedient; it represents do dimunition in the assault on the rights and dignity of gay men and women in this nation.
As someone sort of indicated above, there was probably never any intention of putting the amendment up for a vote, it was purely there to curry favor with the "base." Meanwhile, anti-gay legislation continues in places it does have a chance to be passed. Yuck.
i was hoping maybe cheney's daughter finally cornered him and threatened to whip his ass.
Are the four more years over yet?
Well, let's hope now ole' spawn of elmer fudd drops the idea of banning pro-gay theatre.
Well, he certainly couldn't have dropped it before the election, could he? Now he has nothing to lose. It's his heartfelt apology to the 49% that didn't support him. I wonder how the others feel now?
He's a cracked nutcase, but this is definitely good news for us.
