If anyone is a little bored today, here are a few things to do:
http://www.johnkerry.com/petition/rove.php
--------------
I am part of People For the American Way's campaign to save the Supreme Court.
Given President Bush's track record with lower-court nominees, the odds are good that the person he chooses to replace recently retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor will possess an ideology that threatens basic rights and freedoms. We need to be ready, if and when that happens.
Now is the time to organize. Please go to the link below to join me:

Of COURSE, he's making a speedier annoucement of this! We have a scandal to cover up!
And, thus, I bet he picks someone who WILL fan the flames of controversy to create a fantastic showdown in Congress to eclipse the Rove Leak.
Why unite the country when we have a scandal to cover up?
If he chooses someone who would be amiable to Democrats, I will be very surprised--but I will have gained a titch of respect for him. Maybe THAT'S how we'll extinguish the scandal!
Should be interesting tonite.

He might distract the populace, but nothing will distract the grand jury or the independent investigator.
See my indictment predictions on Auggie's thread.

The rising action of the Conservative Movement continues tonight. The climax will be the day Roe v. Wade is overturned and the falling action will be the cries of the millions of women who voted for Bush and took liberty for granted.

Crap. I need to find this blog again where someone posted the rumored choice.
It's a woman, based out of new Orleans Court of Appeals, I believe.
As the blogger said, she has never met a corporation she didn't like...but, surprisingly, is apparently on the record (at least once but the suggestion was more) as being a big fan of having the government out of private lives (re: gay folks).

Edith Clement is the rumored pick.

Clement is supposedly relatively moderate. During her confirmation for the Appelate Court, she said she would uphold Roe v Wade, b/c that would be her duty as an Appelate Court - to hold up Supreme Court Rulings. However, that could change if she were made a Supreme. But the problem is, she has no paper trail of opinions, so who knows...
BUT, NOW they're saying that Clement isn't really who he is gonna pick...

AP-Washington, July 19, 2005, 7:52 p.m.) President Bush chose federal appeals court judge John G. Roberts Jr. on Tuesday as his first nominee for the Supreme Court, selecting a rock solid conservative whose nomination could trigger a tumultuous battle over the direction of the nation's highest court, a senior administration official said.
Bush offered the position to Roberts in a telephone call at 12:35 p.m. after a luncheon with the visiting prime minister of Australia, John Howard. He was to announce it later with a flourish in a nationally broadcast speech to the nation.
Roberts has been on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit since June 2003 after being picked for that seat by Bush.
Advocacy groups on the right say that Roberts, a 50-year-old native of Buffalo, New York, who attended Harvard Law School, is a bright judge with strong conservative credentials he burnished in the administrations of former Presidents Bush and Reagan. While he has been a federal judge for just a little more than two years, legal experts say that whatever experience he lacks on the bench is offset by his many years arguing cases before the Supreme Court.
Liberal groups, however, say Roberts has taken positions in cases involving free speech and religious liberty that endanger those rights. Abortion rights groups allege that Roberts is hostile to women's reproductive freedom and cite a brief he co-wrote in 1990 that suggested the Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 high court decision that legalized abortion.

If he's that young, that means they want a hard core ultra-Christian who will "undo activism" with a little activism of his own.
God mother fu**ing damn, but I hate Republicans.

Posted: 7/19/05 at 8:32pmThis really sucks. However, as I said earlier in this thread, the change in the Court will lead to the end of the Conservative Movement.

I don't know, Lwyr. don't underestimate the power wielded by ultra-conservative, fundamental Christian ministers and the church. The Republicans have quite intelligently pandered to this group (and financially, they're about as far from helping the majority of Fundamentals, who don't rank high on the income brackets) and really brought up a force to be reckoned with. And, since they've been whipped into a frenzy with the belief that anything less than a fundamental Christian theocracy will bring about the end times, they are fighting tooth and nail.
