re: Bush was NOT 'Re-elected!!!!!

The 22nd Amendment states that you can't be ELECTED to the Presidency more than twice.

So if he wasn't elected in 2000, that means he can be re-elected in 2008.

This is another case of wanted to have the cake and eat it to. You can't say he wasn't elected in 2000 unless you're willing to let him run again in 2008.

re: Bush was NOT 'Re-elected!!!!!

Well... There are the two sides to this incredibly partisan 4 post thread.

With that said, I'll hope that this drifts to the bottom, because it has all been said before. Many times before. Here. Right here, in fact. Many, many times befor.

I'm not sure why idiots is plural in this case. I was merely pointing out that the "thought" that this thread is based on has been expressed here in many, many ways, many, many different times.

Oh, I have a guilty conscience. But I've had that since H.S., and it has very, very little to do with politics. re: Bush was NOT 'Re-elected!!!!!

re: Bush was NOT 'Re-elected!!!!!

Bush was elected in 2000. The Electoral College is the only vote that matters, they can actually vote for whom ever they want to, and they voted for Bush. Bush won fair and square. Bush will most likely win in the electoral college this time also.

re: Bush was NOT 'Re-elected!!!!!

Speed is so right. Bush was elected like every other President in our history, by the electoral college. It usually represents the popular vote, but not always... I believe it was Cleveland or Hayes back in the 1880s that was elected by the electoral college but not by popular vote.

The only way to change this is to amend the constitution.

Do we all need to go back to 8th grade Civics?

re: Bush was NOT 'Re-elected!!!!!

I don't think anyone needs a civics lesson. I don't think the people on this thread are saying that Bush should have won because he won the popular vote. What SOME people believe is that the supreme court installed Bush into office in 2000 when they ruled to stop counting votes. Therefore SOME people would say Bush never TRULY won the electoral votes he needed to get in office...

re: Bush was NOT 'Re-elected!!!!!

The point is, even if they had counted and recounted, the electoral college votes were what mattered...

I might add at this point that I did not vote for Dubya either time...can't stand him...but to claim he is not legally elected is just not accurate

re: Bush was NOT 'Re-elected!!!!!

Ma...actually the point is that there were independent counts done that showed Gore won Florida, which means he would have won the electoral vote, which means he would have been President...
To claim that Bush was elected like any other President in history, even if you agree with the results, is ignoring history...

re: Bush was NOT 'Re-elected!!!!!

There is no guarantee that the electoral votes have to match the popular vote. That was not a part of the constitution. The constitution merely provides for an electoral college. The number of delegates from each state is equal to the number of senators and representatives. These guys cast the deciding votes..it is not dependant on the popular vote, although most of us wish that it was. And yes, every President in our history, whether winning the popular vote or not, was elected by the electoral college.

I agree that Gore won the popular vote in Florida. But he still did not win the electoral college vote. It sucks, but that's the way our founding fathers wrote it up...

re: Bush was NOT 'Re-elected!!!!!

Ma--I'll say it another way for you. Those of us who do not believe that Bush won the 2000 election fairly believe that there was much voter fraud. You really should watch Unprecedented--a brilliant documentary that goes into how black voters were kicked off of the voter lists by racist, fraudulent means--and if that is too extreme, then anyone can agree that the felony list was highly irresponsible.

And, independent firms who recounted every vote in Florida concluded that Bush would have lost that state. The person to blame is Gore for not having every county recounted--this gave the Supreme Court the ability to stop the recount and declare Bush the winner.

We understand how the President is elected. We are just a few of the millions who believe that 2000 did not go down fair and square. You are free to disagree.

Furthermore, many of us are watching carefully to see how Ohio goes down--there is a chance that Kerry could win. It is slim. I don't care if I sound like a poor loser, but I firmly believe that the Diebold electronic voting machines were part of voter fraud. I do not believe in my heart that Florida really went for Bush by the voters. You are free to disagree, but I dare to challenge the system that I believe has been corrupted a second time.

And, I pray that any corruption is revealed. We must fight for a fair vote in this country. It it comes down to Bush having fairly won this election, then I will acknowledge that. But, until we have conclusive proof one way or the other (which we may never have) I will continue to doubt the election's validity as well as the validity of Bush's mandate.
