I've been waiting to see this movie since January, when it won top awards at Sundance, and set a festival record for distribution rights ($25 million paid by Apple Studios).
It's the story of a hearing teenager with an all-deaf family who wants to pursue her dream of singing. Plotwise, it's predictable, but the deaf representation and extensive ASL, along with outstanding performances, especially from 19 year-old Brit Emilia Jones in a star-making role, make it something very special. It's a tearjerker and a crowd-pleaser that I highly recommend.

I saw a giant poster for this as part of a bus shelter on the upper west side just last week. It caught my eye and I thought the casting was exciting.
It's also interesting (for Broadway fans) that a couple of cast members were in Deaf West's Spring Awakening too.
Yes, Oscar winner Marlee Matlin plays the girl's mother, and Daniel N. Durant plays her brother. Troy Kotsur, who plays her father, was in the 2003 production of Big River.
