Impeachment hearings: The White House prepares for the worst

The Bush administration is bracing for impeachment hearings in Congress.

"A coalition in Congress is being formed to support impeachment," an administration source said.

Sources said a prelude to the impeachment process could begin with hearings by the Senate Judiciary Committee in February. They said the hearings would focus on the secret electronic surveillance program and whether Mr. Bush violated the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

Administration sources said the charges are expected to include false reports to Congress as well as Mr. Bush's authorization of the National Security Agency to engage in electronic surveillance inside the United States without a court warrant....

"Our arithmetic shows that a majority of the committee could vote against the president," the source said. "If we work hard, there could be a tie."...

I've become so paranoid that I'm wondering if this just isn't a ploy to rally the troops. Could there actually be such a coalition in the Republican Congress? Or is this a case of a pre-emptive worst case scenario?

I will continue to doubt until it's announced. It just wouldn't fit in with historical patterns if it happened, PJ. Congress is Republican-controlled and Bush is a Republican. In every other case of impeachment Congress has been of one party while the President has been of another. So I'm not seeing it until the fat congressman sings.

re: CONSERVATIVE MAGAZINE: White House Prepares for IMPEACHMENT

That isn't really the core of my doubt, PJ. Like I said, history is why I doubt. It would be unprecedented if Bush got impeached. Is it possible? Sure, anything's possible. But I don't think it's probable and I won't until it actually smacks me in the face.

re: CONSERVATIVE MAGAZINE: White House Prepares for IMPEACHMENT

The question at this point is not the probability of the end result. What the White House is dealing with RIGHT NOW is the potential fallout of the Senate Judiciary hearings in February.

If a majority of the committee votes against Bush (which is possible) because the evidence makes it clear he acted illegally, a snowball effect could ensue--with the Congress, with the media, with the public and with the 2006 elections.

The point of the article is not to say that impeachment and conviction are imminent. (Look how long the Watergate process was.)

The point of the article is that the White House is worried that something will begin in February that they will be unable to stop.

That HAS happened before, in the Army-McCarthy hearings, for just one example.

Let's see what happens with the midterm elections. If the Democrats can win back both houses -- which is certainly possible -- all bets are completely off.

The house is one thing but the senate is a different story. At this point in time I don't see control of the senate changing hands in the midterm elections but I do believe that there is a good chance of having a democratic house come November.

We should all resolve to use the word "impeachment" at least once a day in our daily discourse.

Each time we use it, it becomes more a possibility, even if someone responds to you by saying "Impeachment is impossible!"

We have to "ideate" impeachment in the minds of Americans so that when the time comes, we will be able to look at the real crimes this Administration has committed.

Have YOU used the word "impeachment" yet today?

PalJoey, I appreciate your enthusiasm today. I am fu**ing grumpy. I am pissed at my daughters for bratty behavior. And, listening to stats on Bush's imprimatur on the Judiciary made me stomach sick. And, the scale gave me the reason as to why my belt is tight.

So, I say impeach the idiot or let the Blue States secede.

I couldn't sleep last night, and intead stayed awake and read State of War: The Secret History of the CIA and the Bush Administration by James Risen. It's absolutely terrifying. The domestic spying issue appears to be but the tip of the iceberg.

Here's one of the wildcards: 53 veterans are running for Congress in 2006.

ALL of them are DEMOCRATS.

Click on the link and SUPPORT them! And if you live in their districts, VOTE FOR THEM!

BAND OF BROTHERS

Our Mission

A New Movement

We’ve heard about Iraq, terrorism, and security from every side. But there’s one group that we need to hear from the most, and in 2006 we will. All over America, veterans are running for Congress as Democrats. They’ve been there, they know the story, and it’s time to let them speak.

Band of Brothers is a new political organization formed to assist Democratic veterans running for elected office. We’ve already identified more than three dozen fighting men and women who need our help to challenge the current administration on its failed policies at home and abroad.

They are all strong, principled citizens who have had enough of the current direction of our country, and are ready to fight — as Democrats have always fought — for solutions to the problems of security, health care, and corporate and political corruption. Some have served in the current war in Iraq, some have served our country at other times. But each candidate supported by Band of Brothers must in turn support Our Values.

Separately, each of these veterans offers hope in one district — but together they are a new movement. As veterans who have fought for America, they will fight for us in Congress.

Our Values

Our values are American values.

In 2006, Band of Brothers will propose a bold new progressive politic that stresses American values, cuts across partisan lines, and provides a real choice between a country that works for the few and one that creates opportunity for all.

Republicans are vested in a divided America that is currently tipped in their favor because of their successful development and exploitation of a “family values” brand that adheres to traditional prejudices, gun rights, abortion, and same sex marriage. They have also been able to exploit the tragedy of September 11 and parlay it to a position of strength on National Security issues which has allowed them to pursue their irresponsible approach to the war on terror.

We aim to bring middle class and lower income Americans back into the decision making process by promoting candidates that may not otherwise be heard.

Problem is if one of those Band of Brothers (Paul Hackett) wins his prmiary he still won't win in Ohio. If he did that would be a miracle, but I wouldn't vote for him even though I am a Democrat hardcore. He has no experience. Not good for someone running for Senate.

And people still really don't like Bush (especially after all of this spying stuff) some Republicans may be trying to distance themselves from him a little, making the possibility of impeachment a little more likely.

Unfortunately, I agree with the following opinion I found on another board:

"Since it will always be wartime in Bush's America, he can simply ignore impeachment proceedings...I would bet Bush would refuse to appear and testify before Congress and rely upon his unitary theory of executive power. Then the Republican sheep in the House would vote against impeachment, and that would be that."

re: CONSERVATIVE MAGAZINE: White House Prepares for IMPEACHMENT

The "this is war" argument has gotten a little frayed from overuse these past few years, so I'm not completely buying it. Congress is restless and doesn't step in line quite as easily as it used to. (That, by the way, is the best protection against any one branch having too much power- the other branches keep wanting it for themselves. Which is why our Constitution is awesome.)

That said, the partisan argument, as I've said way too many times, has the most persuasive ring to me. I really, really doubt it'll even come to a trial.

Americans ain't buying it. Bush approval rating back down to its lowest ever, after a brief 1-month recovery: 36%

George W. Bush's overall job approval rating has returned to its lowest point in Bush's presidency as Americans again turn less optimistic about the national economy according to the latest survey from the American Research Group. Among all Americans, 36% approve of the way Bush is handling his job as president and 58% disapprove. When it comes to Bush's handling of the economy, 34% approve and 60% disapprove.

Among Americans registered to vote, 37% approve of the way Bush is handling his job as president and 58% disapprove. When it comes to the way Bush is handling the economy, 35% of registered voters approve of the way Bush is handling the economy and 60% disapprove.

A total of 14% of Americans say the national economy is getting better, which is down from 30% in December and 52% say the national economy is getting worse, which is up from 40% in December. When asked about the national economy a year from now, 15% say it will be better, which is down from 28% in December, and 62% say it will be worse, which is up from 39% in December.

IMPEACH THE BASTARD!
(Martha Graham from a letter to Agnes de Mille) "There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening That is translated through you into action, And because there is only one of you in all time, This expression is unique. If you block it, It will never exist through any other medium And be lost. The world will never have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, Nor how valuable it is, Nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, To keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware Directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, A blessed unrest that keeps us marching And makes us more alive than others."
