My father is on the phone right now - he wants to get me a cat so I won't be lonely when I'm at home. He's researching the hypo-allergenic ones for me.

Tell him to get a female cat. They've done lots of studies and know that they have half as many allergins as tom cats.

Looks like they shed a lot, and the chances of my being allergic (asthma, boo) are about 50% and they aren't very independent. Ah well.

It's not the hair that causes allergies. It's the dander - little flakes of skin. Everybody has it but for some reason tom cat's dander causes allergies more than females. I understand that there's new allergy medicine that's good for cat dander allergy. (Fortunately I'm not allergic but just about everyone I'm related to is. Nobody comes and visits me...)

Shira, if you plan for a puppy, don't forget labradoodles. They were bred to be hypo-allergenic.

Boobs - That's the breed I was looking in to. Apparently they are not independent and shed.
