I just came across an old Playbill from 1942. There's an ad in here for the Hotel Park Central (7th Ave and 55th-56th Sts and home of the famous rooftop Cocoanut Grove nightclub). I believe that hotel was charging $550 per night a year or two ago. This is what the ad says:

$150 A MONTH! gets you
1. A 2 1/2 room, unfurnished suite, carpeted
2. A delicious dinner for 2, every day
3. Electricity for lighting, refrigeration and light cooking
4. Laundering service up to a value of $5 per week for linen and apparel
5. Valet service covering pressing of 6 garments per week
6. Services of a chambermaid, housemen, cleaning, etc.
7. Sundry supplies - soap, tissues, stationery, etc.
8. Many other hotel services, including free use of swimming pool and gymnasium.

I know we were at war then - but it does make you think of the phrase "the good old days"
