re: Can the Adults Please Smoke? - Tantalizing Ten

I don't like it either - but it's the booze in it that turns me off. I just don't like the taste of rum.

It sure has been around for a long time. This early recipe came out of a 16th century cookbook from the Tudor days called "A Proper newe Booke of Cokerye, declarynge what maner of meates be beste in season, for al times in the yere, and how they ought to be dressed, and serued at the table, bothe for fleshe dayes, and fyshe dayes":

To make Pyes - Pyes of mutton or beif must be fyne mynced and ceasoned wyth pepper and salte, and a lyttle saffron to coloure it, suet or marrow a good quantite, a lyttle vyneger, prumes, greate raysins and dates, take thefattest of the broathe of powdred beyfe, and yf you wyll have paest royall, take butter and yolkes of egges and so tempre the flowre to make the paeste.

sounds like the makings of a classic "friends" episode, an english trifle.

a layer of ladyfingers, jam, another layer of ladyfingers, beef sauteed with peas, another layer of jam...

LOL, Robbo!

Mamie - love that you found that out. Actually, it was actually meat they used in Ye Olde Tymes. This is how to make mincemeat

675g (1½lb) Cooking Apples
450g (1lb) Seedless Raisins
450g (1lb) Sultanas
450g (1lb) Shredded Suet
450g (1lb) Soft Brown Sugar
350g (12oz) Currants
225g (8oz) Candied Peel
50g (2oz) Flaked Almonds
2 Lemons
4 tbsp Brandy or Rum
½ tsp Ground Mixed Spice

Peel and core the apples.
Coarsely mince the apples, raisins, sultanas, currants and candied peel.
Place into a bowl and add the chopped suet, sugar, almonds, mixed spice with the juice and grated rind of the lemons, mix thoroughly.
Cover with a cloth and leave in a cool dark place for 2 - 3 days, stirring the mixture 3 - 4 times a day.
Mix in the brandy or rum before potting, pot and seal as jam.

Delicious!

from wikipedia:

Joey's eating
Joey is shown during the show eating a lot. He often states that he loves food, and when asked if he would rather give up food or sex, he cannot decide. Other examples include an episode in which he eats Rachel's trifle, which was 'half English Trifle, half Shepherd's Pie'. While everybody is naturally disgusted by it, he likes it. After Ross says it tastes like feet, he responds: "What's not to like? Jam: good, Custard: good, Meat: gooooooood!".

Rath, my family's recipe for plum pudding calls for suet, it just adds a wonderful flavor.

And I only watched 'Friends' to find recipes, Rath. My favourite ingredient was Monica's Mocholate....

See, if I had not know ALL the ingredients, I might have tried it and liked it. But now that I know... yeah, not so much.

Yeah... I know. And I would have tried it. And maybe even liked it. Had I not known what's in it. Now it's a lost cause. re: Can the Adults Please Smoke? - Tantalizing Ten

I have a friend who hangs her Christmas puddings in the traditional manner - on doorknobs around her house. As she makes puddings for family and friends, there is not a nude, pudding-free door to be seen at her place.

Well maybe we can get you to try some! I have tried making it with other types of shorting and lard. It just does not come out as good. And the smell as it is steaming in the oven!! It just brings back such happy memories. re: Can the Adults Please Smoke? - Tantalizing Ten
