Was the apartment warmer during the the night? Your building probably turns the heat down during the day when most people are out. Maybe if you told the super you were recuperating from surgery, he would turn it back up...

The building usually does turn the heat down during the day, but this is unusually cold. They're having trouble with heat and hot water in two of the 'lines'...

Oy. Maybe I'll heat up a little rum....

It is such an alien concept to me not to have heat...or control of the heat. Small town mentality, I guess... Do you have an electric space heater or something for times like this?
