#0Catcher in the Rye Question
Posted: 1/2/04 at 9:22pmI am answering 38 TCITR questions right now. One of them is "How old is Sunny?" When Holden asks her, she responds "old enough to know better." Do they actually mention her age later in the book or is that the answer?

Is Sunny that prostitute girl Holden hires in the hotel?
((gah, I haven't read that book in ages))
If it's her, I don't think that her specific age is mentioned at all in the book...

Ah, the infamous Chapter 13!!!! I've taught CATCHER many, many times, but I can't recall Sunny's age. My copy of the book is in my office at school, so I can't help you.
You might want to go to SparkNotes.Com. Their plot summaries are usually quite good.

You better not give Dollypop a hard time...he'll flame you at every opportunity (just ask Corine or Albin!)
Come to think of it, I could never flame you...you're too cute, Son.

Wow I haven't read that book in ages either. It's beginning to come back to me, though...
Did you ever find out how old Sunny is?

Posted: 1/3/04 at 3:22pmThis book was SO MUCH fun to read with my class full of jocks. "Antolini's a fag! He tried to rape Holden!".

My teacher became angry with me when I suggested that Holden might be a homosexual. It is one of his favorite books, and he was insulted by the thought that one of his favorte literary characters might be gay. I don't care! I stand by my opinion.

Our class went crazy with that issue! When I had to read the book, we were discussing for hours what happened...I can't believe that there were actually people that thought that he was trying to rape Holden.

Posted: 1/3/04 at 4:13pmMy class too! It must be a jock thing. All of the jocks sit in the back corner and were being very immature. Sometimes I think jocks are gay...

The jocks in my school act gayer than everyone else...they hate gay people yet I always see the guys touching each other and stuff. *rolls eyes* There's nothing wrong with what they're doing, except the fact that they're insulting gay people. They can touch each other all they want. ![]()
*stops before she goes on a rant*
Umm yeah...let us know if you need any more help with those Cather in the Rye questions!

Posted: 1/3/04 at 4:43pmWas Antolini childless? I always thought the fact he was drunk and childless was the reason he petted Holden. Holden was a surreal child figure to him.

Posted: 1/3/04 at 6:40pmWhat does Holden mean when he says he want to be a "catcher in the rye"? I wrote that he meant he wants to be a protector of all children. My teacher said be short and sweet...how is that answer?

There's much to support the idea that Holden is gay:
He tap dances in bathrooms
He goes into great detail decribing how good-looking Stradlater and other guys are
He is never successful with women
He critiques everyone he meets (in a bitchy manner)
He develops a "mother fixation" with older women
He doesn't go into great detail describing the physical appearance of women (as opposed to what he does with men)
He doesn't play really "hard" sports. (The fencing team is a "sissy" team)
...yeah, it can be argued that Holden is gay.

Posted: 1/4/04 at 6:15pmI've tapped danced in the bathroom before. Thanks for scaring me, Dollypop!
