What would Jesus say?
"The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn't change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care"

That's absolutely vile.
That's horrible, completely selfish and a COMPLETE 180 of what Jesus would do. I love how people don't follow the teachings they swear up and down that they believe in.

I would almost hate to be the person at the archdiocesan office who opens the email I blasted off to the archbishop this morning. I am SMOKING HOT about this. The minute they pull this crap my monthly donation for relief services gets redirected to another service provider. I can't cure your homophobia, but I can keep you from screwing around with my money.
Shameful, just shameful.
And that is reason #647 why Moony is my Personal Goddess.
Whatever happened to separation of Church and state? What does same-sex marriage have to do with the social program they provide? This is moronic and totally discriminatory. How dare they? I'm fuming ... what can we do????
BlueMoon ... would you mind sharing the email address you used?

I love you, Moony!
Absolutely disgusting. And my mom wonders why I don't go to church anymore.

WestV - I sent my missive to the Chancellor, Jane Belford because 1) she is in charge of archdiocesan funds and 2) she knows me (chancery@adw.org). She's going to see me at a social gathering over Thanksgiving, so this should be interesting. In terms of policy concerns, I'd contact Archbishop Wuerl, himself (same email address).
Shamey and JG2 - don't love me because I'm bitching at homophobes, love me because I'm so damn cute.
Oh, your cuteness is reason #2 why I love you.
Before you ask, #1 is that big, beautiful heart of yours.

In the Boston Globe; Christains are not supposed to be nice, at least not all the time.
Inconfronting moral evil, Jesus wasn't nice, kind, gentle and sweet .
Disgusting !!!!

First this and now comes word from the Vatican that "I consider if someone is homosexual, it is a provocation and an abuse of this place. Try to go to a mosque if you are not Muslim. It is abuse of our buildings and our religion because the church interprets our religion that it is not ethical. We expect respect of our church as we expect to respect that a person does not have to belong to the Catholic Church. If you have different ideas, go to a different location."
And I was gonna visit and see if I could get some fancy dresses like the boys there wear.
Oh, Jesus

Extortion is such a dirty word.
Do they even READ the Bible? The only time Jesus lost his temper was when people set up a market in a church. He had dinner with society's outcasts all the time. Man, these people are going to burn
Yes, let's hurt those who need it most just to prove to the world that we are homophobes.
Well, the world already knows you're homophobes and quite frankly most people wouldn't expect much more from you anyway.
It's amazing how cheaply love and kindness can be bought.

Did we expect anything different from an organization headed by an ex-Hitler Youth?
How wonderful - philanthropy with conditions!! Now I've heard everything.
Another one of the many reasons why I'm no longer a practicing Catholic.
So, I found out the hard way that there is a character limit to facebook statuses, but this fits. Feel free to use it (I put the link through tinyurl.com, so Facebook might ask you to confirm the link is safe).
Whatever your beliefs this is just WRONG! The Catholic Archdiocese of WashingtonDC will stop social service programs it runs if DC doesn't change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that affects over 10,000 people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care- http://tinyurl.com/y8w5v9u This needs... to be addressed! If you are as upset as I am please e-mail Archbishop Wuerl at chancery@adw.org
..... and then the Catholic leadership wonders why there is so much so-called "Catholic-bashing".
Absolutely shameful. I'm disgusted.
"Philanthropy with conditions." I like that phrase, Dottie. I think I'm going to use it in the nasty email I'm about to fire off to the archbishop.
Thanks for posting the email address ... they have a very strong one from me in their in-box.
Does anyone know of a list of services programs the Catholic church runs in DC? Maybe there are similar programs in the district people can donate to instead.
"...so Facebook might ask you to confirm the link is safe."
the words they asked me to type to confirm the link were, "Moville husbands"

Actually the archdiocese would be shooting itself in the foot.
The programs it administers would be gladly taken over by other community groups. What would happen is that the Catholic charites would render a lot of their staffs unemployed, but these emplowees would be hired by other nonprofits who would be looking for experienced hands who could hit the ground running.
Ultimately the truly redundant peole in this dance would be the senior administrators.
I say, "Fine, other groups will do what Catholic Charities will not. Turn out the lights when you leave."
