"Celebrity's" Right to Privacy - How Far Is Too Far?#0

A female blogger in London http://girlwithaonetrackmind.blogspot.com/) recently had her blog published into a book. Apprently, there are all kinds of sordid details about her sex life in it. She was under the assumption (and I think led to believe by her publishers) that her identity would be kept anonymous.
Fast forward to the book's release, and the press has uncovered who she is, where she works, etc and has printed her real name and occupation. Now the woman is distraught.
Another blogger recently criticized her saying she has no right to complain because she made herself public, anonymously or not.
Who's right?

They're both right, to certain extents. Her indignation is justified if indeed her publishers assured her that she would remain anonymous.
But the blogger's complaint is legitimate: If you publish something on the internet (and later that blog is published in a book), you need to understand that you are exposing yourself in some way. You're allowing yourself to be put in a public light, and there are repercussions to that. If she truly wanted to remain anonymous, she should have taken that into consideration. In today's day and age, it's almost impossible to remain completely anonymous. It's a scary, but true thought: everything we say can be scrutinized, or used to gather information about us. Because of that, special measures need to be taken to ensure anonymity. And even then, there's no guarantee. Even if the book hadn't been published, there are MANY ways to find out a person's identity on the internet.
It may suck, but that's the way it is.

SweetQ, pick up the rock and remove yourself from under it. People. Have. Sex.
I think it would be clearer that, say, the publishing company were at fault if THEY released her name. But if the information was just dug up, then I agree with what Chica said about the difficulty of remaining totally anonymous.

Posted: 8/30/06 at 11:27pmI'll go further, and say that sex is a very basic human need. So, yes, many times a good **** buddy can come in handy. (*giggle* come...)

Edina: I did tell you the facts of life, didn't I, sweetie?
Saffie: If you mean that time you sat on my bed and shook me awake at two in the morning, stoned out of your brain, and slurred into my ear 'By the way sweetie, people have it off,' then yes, you told me the facts of life.

I think "Q" was commenting on the term "Emergency".
It sounded as if you would break a glass door and instead of an extinguisher you would find a ready and willing partner. :o)

In a better world, that would be a reality.

So, here's a little bit of irony.
About an hour after I posted this, someone ran to the blog of the woman who wrote the original rant and "outed" me.

Here’s a funny thing you might get a laugh out of, Xx. Looks like your nemesis Moxie has resorted to writing about you on message boards. https://forum.broadwayworld.com/readmessage.cfm?thread=909428#2458958
But she doesn’t read your blog or obsess about you in any way. Riiiiiiiiight.
Yet, I never mentioned who wrote the critical rant. Huh. Funny. Someone knew exactly who I was talking about. Either someone from here also reads the girl's blog (possibly) or the blogger herself was doing a search of Girl With a One Track Mind, found my post and wrote the comment herself. Or someone was googling me, found my username on here, found the post and then went back to the woman's blog to post the above comment.
This is the sort of thing that made me want to talk about this issue in the first place.
When you make yourself a "public figure" (and I use that term loosely in regards to myself) then where's the line between info that gets circulated, discussed and condemned and taking that extra step? There's info that's easily available online, then there's stuff you have to dig for. Where's the line?

There should be a line, but unfortunately, there really isn't.
What I find odd, though, is that nowhere on this thread did you post anything that is unsavory, or meant to demean the person who posted the "rant". You merely used it as a starting point to have a discussion about the nature of "celebrity" (or any kind of notoriety) and the right to privacy.
Most likely it was someone from BWW. But it seems like too much toruble to go through for so little.

Thank you beacon!!
I WAS indeed commenting on the term "Emergency"
I am 22- I understand very well that people have sex.
Emergency sex sounds a bit...like an over-reaction.
