I'm interested in donating money to a charity. Does anyone have any suggestions about what charity I should donate to?

UNICEF, American Cancer Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Children's Miracle Network, a charity for the genocide in Darfur, Special Olympics, the list goes on and on. There are lots of people who could use support.
There are also 20 some charities with the word "cancer" in them in the U.S., any of them can use help.

Speaking of helping kids with disabilities, there are Miracle Leagues (baseball fields set up for people with disabilities) and Imagination playgrounds (same idea, pretty much) that are being built different places. If there's anything like that in your area, I'm sure they could use some funding.

we have the playground around here but ours are called jonathan's dream. they were named for a boy who had sma, a cause very near and dear to my heart.

You should donate to support the cause(s) that matter to you, my only suggestion would be to check out the organization's rating on a site like Charity Navigator, etc. before doing so.

Believe it or not, 4-H! They're really fantastic and they have a strict non-discrimination clause for adult leaders. Take THAT, Boy Scouts of America!

I work for a very small agency dealing with victims of Domestic Violence. Not only is it a very worthy cause, but I can assure you, every single donation makes a HUGE difference. Private me and I'll send you our info!

I would find something you think is important. For me Human Rights are important. Charities are tricky because often times them money is spent on overhead costs. That said, in many cases these are the only groups reaching out to specific causes.

*Seemingly the world leader on speaking out and acting out for human rights. It's a fantastic organization.
Heifer International - http://www.heifer.org/
*This is the coolest charity; you can "buy" livestock (from goslings to llamas) to hungry and needy people in developing countries. It makes a fantastic gift too.
The only problem I have with American charities is that they should not have to exist. Our government sends huge amounts of unnecessary aid to places like Israel (last year over $80 billion dollars) and cannot even feed our own people. Something is wrong here. We need to stop letting these politicians fleece us.

I don't mean to start anything here, but these are my thoughts on the "help our people first" argument.
I don't think we'll ever cure hunger in our country or anywhere else, unfortunately. I'm all for doing what we can, but I think waiting to help out any other nation until all of our citizens are fed will result in us NEVER helping any other nations.
Also, it's arguable that our hungry are much better off than those in other countries. I'm taking a macroeconomics class right now where we learned that 50% of the world's people have living standards under what we had in 1900. They obviously need help, and since we are one of the richer nations in the world, I think that's kind of one of our responsibilities.
But, this is purely my opinion and nothing else. I could be way off base, and that's cool too. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

ASPCA or a more local animal shelter/group near you.
My personal other suggestions include:

Mistress - Sorry if I came off as meaning we should cut off world aid until we help ourselves. That is not what I am implying. I think the US has enough money and power to help ourselves and to some extent every needy nation in the world. Instead, we are not doing either.
It is our responsibility, if not our sole responsibility as a world super power. Unfortunately, the excessive aid supplied to places like Israel is used for arms and war. This is not going to solve anything.

I give to BC/EFA when I can.
On a local level, I have volunteered with the American Red Cross, United Way, the local food bank, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Salvation Army. I hope to start volunteering with the local AIDS/HIV charity when my schedule dies down a bit. One of their primary focuses is providing nutritious meals to homeless and low-income people who suffer from HIV or AIDS.
I am a firm believer that to whom much is given, much is expected. It's the least I can do to give back a little bit of what God has blessed me with.
Another fantastic project that has just started is Project (Red). Check out their line at your local GAP store--the clothes are great and 50% of the profits go to AIDS relief in Africa.
