Say what you wish about Christmas, the holidays but this is the time of year I like to do do something kind. In years past it is toys for Tots or giving monies to kids organizations (still give a large donations to St Jude's Children's Cancer Hosp every year). This year I rescued a stray geriatric pomeranian who was scheduled to be put down. Seems his owners, faced with an old dog, decided to just abandon him in an empty field. I got him home yesterday and he lies here at my feet stuffed with chicken, on a warm fleece blanket snoring (and farting) happily. Life is good!
Happy Holidays everyone!
Nice. What's his name?
Yay for your new friend. I do work with an animal shelter myself, so it doesn't surprise me the horrible things people do to some animals. It's people like you who make me glad that older animals are given a chance because they are so hard to place.

Aw, I'm so glad I clicked on this thread. How wonderful to have a new canine family member so close to the holidays.

I named him Codger. As in "Old Codger"… First choice was Geezer. Codger sounded classier.
<----- Honestly, who could adandon this old guy???!

Awww...he looks more like a puppy than a codger!
He's 15! (they think, Poms are a long lived breed). Seems his previous owners abandoned him in a vacant lot I guess because he was old and in need of veterinary care. We pulled him from animal control where he was scheduled to be euthanized.
Way to go Snafu!
OT - Pink is a big animal activist, and when she heard that someone had thrown a pup from an overpass, and that the dog required serious surgery, Pink handed over $5,000 to the Ace of Hearts animal rescue organization to pay for the puppy’s successful surgery. The pup has found a loving home.
Love her!
We are adopting Sally, a baby beagle that my dad found behind his shop. Animal control is having a really hard time finding dogs homes, so he wouldn't let them take her or her sister to the shelter. We have only gotten to spend about an hour with her so far, but she's been with my parents for three weeks.
We're trying to make the transition as easy as possible. When they picked us up at the airport last night, I got lots of kisses and then she proceeded to fall asleep on my lap. It was love.
That is awesome Jersey girl!
When I went to Animal control to track down my little guy I was saddened to see that 99.5% of the animals there were Pit Bulls that people either abandoned, abused or just gave up because they weren't great fighters. The woman at the ACC tried to interest me in a young Pit Bull who had been dropped off there when he was 4 months old. She said the original owners didn't realize they had to housebreak a puppy. He has been in a cage for almost 5 months. The staff is trying desperately to find him a home because his time is well up.
Codger is an amazing little guy! There is something very spiritual about geriatric dogs. They aren't phased by much. They stop and ponder, sometimes I feel trying to remember why things interested them in the past, or perhaps just to savor the moment,
Codger gets all excited when he knows dinner is coming. His eyes sparkle behind the cataracts and he does this funny old man two step side shuffle dance. Going to have to capture it on tape.
Most of the dogs we get at the shelter here are pit bull mixes. It is really sad. They are such good dogs. It's a shame they have gotten such bad reputations for the stupidity of people.
