It looks both really awesome and incredibly depressing. Hoffman looks incredible in it.

Remember when trailers used to give you a feel for what a movie was about?

Remember when Philip Seymour Hoffman didn't infect the screen? Remember when Charlie Kaufman hadn't yet started writing his bogus over-clever gimmicky crap?
For a reminder, go see THE GODFATHER and THE GODFATHER PART II. Be reminded of what real movies can be like.
Don't be fooled by the Hoffman and the Kaufman. It isn't too late.
I cannot wait. I'll be there opening day. Love BEING JOHN MALKOVICH. Love ADAPTATION. Adore ETERNAL SUNSHINE.
And Roscoe, films can be many things. There isn't a "right" way to do film. Movies like THE GODFATHER are one way, and THE GODFATHER is a masterpiece. But Kaufman's films and screenplays play with the medium in a different way than those films. That doesn't make them un"real." You may not like them, but, you know, just because something isn't your style or taste doesn't make it bogus or gimmicky by default...

Well of course, Stick. There are lots of right way to do films, and one of the right ways to do a film was found by Michel Gondry when he made the only good film yet made from a Kaufman Batch O' Gimmicks: ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, which is to BEING JOHN MALKOVICH what THE GODFATHER is to DePalama's SCARFACE.
I never said that Kaufman's scripts are bogus and gimmicky because they aren't my style or taste. I think that Kaufman's scripts are bogus and gimmicky because they are, well, bogus and gimmicky. There are lots of things that aren't my style or taste that aren't bogus or gimmicky.
I saw it a few weeks ago at the Toronto Film Festival. It's nearly unwatchable. I've never wanted to walk out of a movie so badly in my life. And I say this as a fan of Charlie Kaufman's other works. The story dissolves about halfway through the movie and it just becomes things happening. I think I understand what they were going for. I also hated it.

I'll see it anyway. It looks too interesting to pass up.
I wouldn't discourage you from seeing it. I'm glad I saw it, if only to understand what a failure it is.

I have a feeling I'll probably end up loving it. I love crazy movies like this. I'm even one of eight people who liked SOUTHLAND TALES!

It's playing in one theater in New York today! Check it out, NYers!!!!
Seeing it this weekend!
I love Kaufman's movies; I thought ADAPTATION was terrific, with an amazing cast. ETERNAL SUNSHINE is pretty good, but makes me so sad I can hardly watch it, and MALKOVICH contains what I think will be one of the great modern performances in Catherine Keener's work.
I have no problem with over-clever films; it's the under-clever ones I hate.

I would easily put MALKOVICH on the list of the top 10 funniest films I've ever seen.
